I think much of L. Ron Hubbard's writing has something uniquely in common with John Norman's writing. I'll leave it to Mobileread's audience to figure out what that something is.

You don't mean... you can't mean... they both typed their manuscripts on paper rolls so they didn't have to change sheets?

Wordy, yep. Hubbard was an author that desperately needed an editor to rein them in and take an ax to their raw product. Crap? Depends on the work. His later stuff (Mission Earth in particular) is absolutely ridiculous, but much of the stuff that established his rep is more "pulpy" and perfectly normal for the time period. Better than much of the crap that was being published then, or he wouldn't have developed that reputation.

From what books I've read of Hubbard's, I'd say that Norman sounds far worse, but I can understand the comparison. Hubbard's writing was at least quick and easy to read, so I got some enjoyment out of it. I just had to turn off my brain and ignore all the stupid stuff + all the impossible stuff + all the ax-grinding stuff + all the Mary Jane insert stuff. (*cough*jonniegoodboytyler*cough*)

I'm not defending Hubbard, but I can honestly say I'd reread Mission Earth or Battlefield Earth any day over something like Gentry Lee's Rama sequels. At least they weren't horribly depressing. I wouldn't recommend reading Hubbard's works (beyond maybe his early stuff) to anyone, though.

From what I've heard over the last month or two, it seems there's a bit of a love/hate divide on opinions. Anyone who finds themself in the former group is probably gonna end up spending actual money to get Books 10 and 11, and anyone in the latter is gonna regret picking up the first 9 for free!
I seldom get that far in a series, so I'm fine.

The Keeper Chronicles by JA Anderson is on .99 right now.

Great Quest Fantasy, Sword & Sorcery type stuff. I'm a little over halfway through the first book and really enjoying it.

I do have the phony 'box set' cover art. Especially since there's already a decent cover for the whole trilogy.

I read Battlefield Earth. One of the biggest mistakes of my life. Terrible book with way too many places it should have ended. It may possibly be wore then Finnegans Wake. The reason I say it's possibly worse is because you know Finnegans Wake is terrible before you read it. Battlefield Earth, you may not know that it's terrible and you start to read and and wish you never started it.

The Greatcoats series by Sebastien de Castell is variously discounted on Amazon.com
$3, $4, $4, $1. The middle books were cheaper in the past.
Here's a summary of the first one:
Quote:
The Greatcoats - legendary heroes, arbiters of justice . . . or notorious traitors?

The Greatcoats are travelling magistrates bringing justice to all . . . or at least they were, before they watched the Dukes impale their King's head on a spike. Now the land's heroes are reviled as traitors, their Greatcoats in tatters.

Facio, Kest and Brasti have been reduced to working as mercenaries, but when they find their employer dead - and are forced to watch as the killer plants evidence framing them for the murder - they realise things are about to get even worse.

For the royal conspiracy that began with overthrowing an idealistic young king is spreading to Rijou, the most corrupt city in the land, and the life of a young girl hangs in the balance.

Storybundle has quite a good bundle, The Dark SF Bundle curated by Lavie Tidhar. I've read titles by eight of the included authors, and the $5+ basic tier includes a Tchaikovsky novella I've been contemplating paying full price for, and a Nebula-winning Kress novella. (Which I disliked greatly, but there's one me and a large number of Nebula voters. For me it was going along great and botched the landing in an epic fashion.)

$5 and up gets you:
One Day All This Will Be Yours by Adrian Tchaikovsky
After the Fall, Before the Fall, During the Fall by Nancy Kress
Genocidal Organ by Project Itoh
Infinity Wars edited by Jonathan Strahan

and $20 and up adds:
The Second Shooter by Nick Mamatas
Skyward Inn by Aliya Whiteley
Martian Sands by Lavie Tidhar
Plague Birds by Jason Sanford
The Fate of Mice by Susan Palwick
The Freeze-Frame Revolution by Peter Watts
