Oh for sure - I've DNF'd close to 100 books this year - I stuck this one out because I was fairly sure I knew whodunit. That I waded to the very end only to find I was wrong rubbed salt into the wound. Pride goeth before a fall, forsooth!

Finished the audiobook Hörrorstor by Gracy Hendricks and enjoyed it. Was pretty gruesome towards the end but I should have expected that.

Just picked up The Woman in the Library by Sulari Gentill for my next audiobook and I’m enjoying it so far! This is another genre I don’t typically read (modern thriller) but it seems like it will be good fun. First time using hoopla for audio books and it seems good (anything to save me from an audible subscription!)

Hoping I get some time to myself this week to read my ebooks

Edit: I also want to vouch for the power of the DNF. I’ve read 36 books this year and DNF’d at least 50. Probably more. No time to waste on books I don’t care about

Just started Paper Wife by Laila Ibrahim. I've read all her other books and the sample drew me in right away.

Which was OK to good. Not her best, IMO.

I just started reading The Right Sort of Man by Allison Montclair, the first of the Sparks and Bainbridge series. Not one I'd heard of, but a review from a favourite author, Dana Stabenow, on Goodreads made me think I might enjoy it. Turns out I very much do enjoy it! About 2/3rds of the way through, but I had to stop and put the next couple on hold at my library.

The premise is that two women start up a marriage bureau business right after the end of WWII in London. But murder happens, and they end up having to solve it to protect their own business.

The period details read accurate (from an outsider's view, obviously)and the writing is funny, witty and really quite good.

OK, I’ll bite. I want to load some more lighter listening on my waterproof MP3 player and it’s available right now.

I read, but didn't listen, to the first one, but have the second one up on my phone. I'll be curious what you think of the narrator (and the book itself, of course.)

The ebook had a waitlist and I need some light stuff for swimming anyway. I like to have a selection so I have alternatives if I dislike something. I don’t know the narrator, either.

I have this book on hold at Overdrive in both eBook and audiobook. I'll see which one becomes available first.

I’m reading Caged by Amy Johnson. I didn’t expect to enjoy this book as much as I am. Only about 20% of the way through and I expect it’ll be a top 10 for me if it doesn’t fall off.

Recent reading...

House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland. A young adult contemporary fantasy. Some well drawn characters in an intriguing set up with some unexpected turns. I enjoyed this very much: 4/5.

Return to Reason: The Science of Thought from Scientific American. While many of the articles here reiterate things I've read in other places, I did think this was one of the better Scientific American collections I've read. 4/5.

The Good Knight by Sarah Woodbury. A historical mystery/adventure/romance story interwoven with real historical events. I enjoyed it. Probably 3.5/5.

1632 by Eric Flint. A sort of alternative history fantasy. It has been sitting on my reader for a long while, but with the recent death of Eric Flint I thought I would try it. There's a lot I could say, but will keep it simple: DNF, abandoned early, not for me.

Quarter done with From Doon With Death, book 1 in Ruth Rendell's Wexford series. After a mediocre start to August, this book is looking promising

That particular Wexford outing is too dated and has a problem somewhat personal to me in it. I enjoyed the Wexford books and some of the TV series, but I skip that Doon every time.

I think I understand why you find it problematic. I did too, although I cut it some slack for the exact reason that it WAS so dated, it would be interesting to know what the author thought about the book and its core conceit decades later. I always like to start series with recurring characters from book 1, but I could have skipped this one for sure
