[Metadata Source Plugin] Goodreads

I had been using the plugin without any issue for a few months but now I can't update progress on a seemingly popular book. I don't know if it is related to the new update, user error, or something to do with this book





Edit: the images won't post so I will just write down that I get the IndexError:list index out of range when I try and sync. Also while the title usually shows up in the dialog box in the Goodreads catalogue it doesn't now and I can't edit the author or title to see if a different combination may link to something in the Goodreads catalogue

I've recently noticed a problem with Goodreads metadata: it can't get a match when the id is already set. Looking at the log, seems like the plugin is adding '-aaaa' to the book link, which makes it invalid.

It is working fine here and the issue is not in the plugin. It is what you have as the Goodreads identifer. I have highlighted what you have wrong in the GR part of the metadata download. If you looked at that book in the metadata editor, you would see that you had "goodreads:goodreads:25537962". When the plugin generates the URL, it is simply removing the "goodread:" from the start of the identifier and using the rest. I don't know how you got that identifier, but, if you fix it the metadata download will work properly.

Sorry for that. My mistake.
I was getting an error with Amazon metadata and while testing I used copy and paste to test without the IDs and ended up messing the goodreads ID.
Its all good now.

I am getting a similar issue to thiago.eec, but I have confirmed that the cause isn't the same. I have disabled other metadata sources since they weren't returning useful results half of the time anyways, however goodreads isn't returning anything useful either.

Interestingly, it seems to work once in a while, but even then doesn't pull information like publisher or series properly. Covers are often wrong as well, when they do work. I have tried the "Get ASIN for kindle editions" and "Scan multiple editions" features as well, but no luck. This happens with all books I have tried.

Goodreads has updated its website, and this plugin depends on DOM. Most elements fail. It may occasionally work, as sometimes the previous website page is still being served (probably by cache or some servers still being updated).

Is this plugin open-sourced somewhere? If it is, I have already solved some of the issues and can contribute to its update.

Yeah, have had to manually input metadata a lot more lately. Lots of "fails".

For some reason lately my attempts to download metadata and covers will fail more often than not. Any amount of attempts to bulk download will range between all failing and all succeeeding. I've manually input the goodreads ID for each book and then bulk downloaded metadata/covers to clean everything up.

I've attached an error log from one recent attempt. An initial attempt resulted in all failing. The second attempt had 21 books succeeding and 20 failing. The attached log was 10 of 41 books succeeding to download the metadata/cover.

Already suffering from noise within his cork-lined walls, his poor soul was not ready for the fresh hell when his neighbor Dr. Williams married a widow with small children.
Chiefly to Mrs. Williams, these ever-polite letters (often accompanied by flowers, compliments, books, even pheasants) are frequently hilarious—Proust couches his fury in a gracious tone. In 1950, at the age of twenty-four, William Clark Styron, Jr., wrote to his mentor, Professor William Blackburn of Duke University. The young writer was struggling with his first novel, Lie Down in Darkness, and he was nervous about whether his “strain and toil” would amount to anything. “When I mature and broaden,” Styron told Blackburn, “I expect to use the language on as exalted and elevated a level as I can sustain. I believe that a writer should accommodate language to his own peculiar personality, and mine wants to use great words, evocative words, when the situation demands them.”
In February 1952, Styron was awarded the Prix de Rome of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, which crowned him a literary star. In Europe, Styron met and married Rose Burgunder, and found himself immersed in a new generation of expatriate writers. His relationships with George Plimpton and Peter Matthiessen culminated in Styron introducing the debut issue of The Paris Review. Literary critic Alfred Kazin described him as one of the postwar “super-egotists” who helped transform American letters.
His controversial The Confessions of Nat Turner won the 1968 Pulitzer Prize, while Sophie’s Choice was awarded the 1980 National Book Award, and Darkness Visible, Styron’s groundbreaking recounting of his ordeal with depression, was not only a literary triumph, but became a landmark in the field.
Part and parcel of Styron’s literary ascendance were his friendships with Norman Mailer, James Baldwin, John and Jackie Kennedy, Arthur Miller, James Jones, Carlos Fuentes, Wallace Stegner, Robert Penn Warren, Philip Roth, C. Paul Engelmann was a friend and disciple of Wittgenstein's at just the time when Wittgenstein was composing his Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. He first gives a picture of the attractive and earnest personality of the young Wittgenstein. Then come two chapters dealing with religious questions and Wittgenstein's literary and musical tastes. In chapter 4 Engelmann deals with the Tractatus, arguing that attention has been paid too exclusively to the logical part of the work, at the expense of Wittgenstein's anything but nihilistic belief in the inexpressibility of "the higher". There is some valuable new light cast on his reactions to Russell's Preface and his later association with Moritz Schlick. By pure coincidence I too have been hit with the issues mentioned above of the plugin getting less reliable and started looking at it tonight. I have noticed it for at least the last 4-6 months.

(Edited) I thought the problem was being triggered by the random user agents, but even when I hard-code that I see different responses coming back. So that theory was wrong. My only conclusion now is that Goodreads are very slowly rolling out a new (under the hood) version of their website servers and depending on which server in the farm you hit you either get some html this plugin knows how to parse or the kind it does not as yet...

I'm still looking at the html responses coming back to see what changes we could make to the code. The crudest approach is to support both variants (assuming there are only two of course). Will take another look this weekend if someone else doesn't beat me to it...

After many hours of pain I have a new version of the plugin that should fix all the issues (and probably create some new ones but that is part of software dev). Goodreads do indeed have two different versions of their book details pages at the moment and it is random as to which you will see (or indeed what the plugin will see).

I had to completely rewrite the plugin scraping logic to support the new Goodreads pages while still keeping support for the old ones. One side effect of this is there is slightly better data at least in some cases due to how I am able to extract it. For instance I found extra tags appearing for books over previous.

I will give the new plugin to DavidFor to manage the distribution, hopefully he isn't too busy to do the usual release stuff nowadays. Otherwise I will put a zip file here for manual download for people who are more keen to start testing it...
