I just decommissioned the Win2k box that has run since about 2001 (at least that was the last time I installed the OS.) I used it as a gateway, print server, etc. At 400 MHz it is a bit slow by current standards. The last reboot/restart was over two years ago. Alas, the evolution of the home network has rendered the box surplus. Also rebuilding the wife's machine with a new motherboard and CPU and memory.

I'm pretty happy with Ubuntu 9, actually. My issues have really had more to do with the ATI graphics card and my 3D hobby, which get along rather less well than I had hoped. Before that, I had some issues with Evolution being shut out of the Exchange server at the university, but that's because M$ decided to drop WebDav support in Exchange, probably to try to make it harder for non-M$ applications to connect. Ubuntu itself has not given me any problems, nor have the apps it comes with.

Lefty: Does this Daz software need something from the United Kingdom, then?
Hugo (getting confused again): The United Kingdom?
Lefty: Well, the United Kingdom is far, far away, right?
Hugo (somewhat nervous, and thinking of Shrek): Yes
Lefty: And since it is a Kingdom, it must have a king, right?
Hugo (getting exceptionally nervous by the length of Lefty's logical deduction): Well, that or a queen.
Lefty: So that's why she was going on about far king dlls. Isn't dlls a strange name for a king?
Hugo (deciding to take they easy road): Yes.
Lefty (changing tack): That looks like the ninth cup of tea she's making. And her chuntering is getting louder. Do you think we could help?
Hugo (somewhat stunned that Lefty knows the word chuntering): It couldn't hurt. Lets have a look.
Lefty: Has she got the wrong monitor?
Hugo (getting slightly confused again, and thinking of Wallace and Grommit): The Wrong Monitor?
Lefty: Yes. It says here it couldn't find the Microsoft.VC80.CRT. She's got an LCD monitor, not a CRT. If we get rid of the LCD, would that help.
Hugo (now very worried with Lefty's Monitor Identification Skills): I don't think that's a good idea.
Lefty (deflated): Shall I go back to purring?
Hugo (relieved): That's a very good idea. And I'll get the Muffin man to bring some really nice double chocolate muffins.
Wow. I hope the muffins go well with the tea. And that you get it all installed.

Thank you SO MUCH. That was just what I needed today!

I think I'm going to have to reinstall and put Windows on a partition (with no network configured), even though I'll usually boot to Linux. I have another machine I can play with 3d on, but it's not as convenient as this one (though it is faster). I've heard that support for ATI 3D acceleration may be working later this summer. (It's really an ATI card problem, more than a Linux problem, apparently.)

Edit: and though the Muffin Man does sometimes make muffins, he's actually better known for his Triple Chocolate Scones.

Don't torture us that way. You can't just casually mention the food of the gods like that, and then just leave and go to another thread. How cruel.

If only they made Photoshop for Linux...

I would terminate my relationship with Windows.

With a shotgun.

They make it for Apples, though. And if you're only going to be shooting the Windows media and not the PC, there's this sort of thing: http://lifehacker.com/software/hack-...800-321913.php

Great link. I suspect OSX wouldn't like my ATI graphics card, either, and since this is a laptop, I don't have any way to fix that.

Although... I did find links saying people have gotten this to work on a Dell Latitude...

I'm jealous.

Not the vacation part but because you have a job.

But have a nice one. What are you going to do?

I'm sorry, Yvan. I hope that you can find a good job soon.

I don't have the resources to go anywhere, but I plan on having a nice, fun, relaxing vacation anyway. I anticipate lots of long walks, some marathon computer game sessions, spending time with friends, working on my writing projects, and of course reading!
