Full Text Search query

I tried to find texts only in certain ebook formats like PDF, so I entered in FT:

Code:

MATCH "format : PDF" AND "<some existing query text>"

This however resulted in 0 books found, where several should be found.
What is wrong with my approach?

The query you type is entered into a larger SQL query, you acn match against anything but the text. If you want to restrict to some subset of books, first do a search

formats:pdf

in calibre then open the fts dialog and chosoe "Restrict searched books" checkbox.

Thanks Kovid. I did use the reference in the FT window to the SQLite FTS5 syntax, which suggested more was possible, but I understand now that searching is limited to:
