You really should fix your Windows as it is broken. If that means a fresh install, so be it.

It may well be but it's a hell of a lot of work to do a fresh install then having to reinstall all the many programs I have and possibly many of their settings and passwords etc. As it's only Calibre 6 that doesn't work it's not worth that time committent.

It is worthwhile to invest that time. By NOT having these updates your computer is open to all kinds of viruses, hackers, spyware, other problems that these updates correct.
I have been doing updates of Windows for the past 30 years, and I only had a problem once, already many years ago. Start with a clean sheet, and you will enjoy it. And yes, proper security on a computer is ALWAYS quite a bit of work. |

The registry changes to turn off auto-updates for Windows 10 are not that invasive. Kovid's instructions for setting up a virtual Windows machine for building calibre detail them. Wouldn't take much to reverse. Plus, I'm pretty sure that manually updating Windows 10 should still be an option..

Well I've had no updates for years and no problems with any nasties with a combination of Defender ( which does update) and Malwarebytes. A friend who has standard Windows gets all the updates and more often than not an update causes some issue or another needing another update to correct the problem the last one caused.
Manual updates are not available as an option. Can you point me to where Kovid's registry changes you mention are listed so I can see if they are the same as the ones that have been applied to my registry? |

I think I've had exactly one issue with a Windows update, and that was years ago. *shrug*
It's actually not even a registry change now that I look at it: https://github.com/kovidgoyal/bypy/b...or-use-in-a-vm It's the first half of step 5. But if manual updates are not an option, then someone went way out of their way to change things when disabling auto updates would have been enough. So I doubt reversing it will be so simple. That's too bad. Last edited by DiapDealer; 07-23-2022 at 12:58 PM. |

Yes it can be a pain to do this, but it's not as difficult as you think. But you do need to make a backup first so you can access any data you want to extract to the clean system. |

![]() The advantage being, an In-place Upgrade leaves applications as-is. I've done this on 4-5 systems to good effect; not mine, colleagues/friends, they were invariably well pleased. I've always followed this tutorial ==>> Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade | Tutorials BR Last edited by BetterRed; 07-23-2022 at 11:18 PM. |

![]() As a bonus you'll get Windows 11, which I installed in May when I rebuilt mine. Last edited by hobnail; 07-23-2022 at 09:47 PM. |
