It used to work that way, but I changed it in late 2020 to match normal copy/paste conventions rather than the custom code it had before.

If you drag/drop a URL into the edit box instead of copy/paste it, you will get a newline. And you can drag/drop a selected block of HTML (or even a whole page selected with ctrl-a) and FFF will pick the valid story URLs out from the HTML.

Yes, I remember how it used to work and that was my favourite method. I understand matching conventions. Thanks for the other suggested methods.

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention, it was Literotica. Anyway, your fix, well, fixed it.

Honestly, FFF is only responsible for getting the CSS into the file. Whether it works or not is between you, your CSS and the reader program you use.

If you still think there's something different in FFF in cal5 vs cal6, please post the two epubs(from cal5 & cal6) and I'll dissect them.
Ah sorry I was wrong. I was referring to the cover being generated based on the first page, not the CSS being wrong when you view it in a reader. I basically just have "Update Calibre Cover (from EPUB)" enabled and the rest are disabled under FFF's Calibre Cover settings. Normally that should work for my cover needs but the update to Calibre seems to have changed something with how it generates the cover based on the first page of the EPUB.

I can recreate it by selecting "Set the cover for the book from the selected format" when I edit the metadata individually or "Set from e-book files" when editing metadata in bulk.

It seems the CSS is only rendering correctly when I edit the book via Calibre.

I've included the cover file and metadata.opf in the attachment.

I don't think there's nothing FFF can do about this.

I can't find it now, but I remember discussing with kovid (when cal5 came out?) about the ebook reader ignoring background CSS and it was either intended or unavoidable.

This post in another thread about a year ago suggests it's intended and a possible workaround:

Yeah it's strange, Calibre seems to be ignoring all the CSS for the first page when it automatically generates the cover, but follows the CSS when I view or edit the EPUB. Oh well, I can just revert to Calibre 5 and it's back to normal.

Adding romantic and platonic columns (AO3)

Hi,

I'm new to Fanficfare and have been reading through the forum to learn and change things in my library. But still haven't found a fix for what I want to do.

I want to create two columns for ships. One for romantics and the other one for platonics (ao3 use the ampersand (&) to identify this). Like this one: https://archiveofourown.org/works/30...pters/74655264

How could I do this?

Also, there's a way to maintain the tag orders without marking the box Contains Names? Asking because when I mark it separate everything with an ampersand (&) and this mess up the relationships that are platonic (it separate them).

Thanks for the help.😊

I am attempting to update the metadata for some of my saved FanFiction.Net stories as the author has changed their name 'again' but when I tried to do so I am getting the following error 'HTTP Error in FFF '403 Client Error: Forbidden for url: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/1343686...Clash'(403)
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/1343686...h-Worlds-Clash'. I have confirmed the URL is correct and working in a web browser.
It is probably my settings for FanFiction.Net are stuffed but can anyone please help?

FFF doesn't have an easy way to do that. But it does have a complicated way.

This works for me, but read the comments and try to understand it; I make no promises you can just paste it in your config and have everything work.

Code:
## could be under [archiveofourown.org] instead, but I believe there are
## some other sites that use / and & ships conventions.
[defaults]

# create a couple new metadata entries
add_to_extra_valid_entries:,romships,platships

# label them (used with titlepage and logpage)
romships_label:Romantic Relationships
platships_label:Platonic Relationships

# copy standard entry ships into them
include_in_romships:ships
include_in_platships:ships

# only include / ships in romships and & ships in platships.
# & because HTML
add_to_include_metadata_post:
 romships=~/
 platships=~&

# optional: add romships and platships to the titlepage
# inside the ebook.
add_to_titlepage_entries:,romships,platships

# Set romships and platships to your custom columns.
# change #romshipscol and #platshipscol to match the
# lookup names for your custom columns
add_to_custom_columns_settings:
 romships=>#romshipscol
 platships=>#platshipscol

# don't sort ships, romships or platships
keep_in_order_ships:true
keep_in_order_romships:true
keep_in_order_platships:true
Note that there's a checkbox at the bottom of the FFF config settings Custom Columns tab "Allow custom_columns_settings from personal.ini to override", that must be checked.

There are a number of wiki pages that explain more about what the settings above mean. See:

See FAQ Why am I having errors downloading from fanfiction.net?

ADDENDUM

Asheron: While testing metadata settings for Calibre columns, it helps a lot to have setup a Saved Metadata Column and use "Update Calibre Metadata from Save Metadata Column" mode. That way you're not hitting the site every time.

FFF can help you do that automatically.
  1. I assume (and recommend) that you download to epub format for updates; it sounds like you are.
  2. In Calibre Preferences, under Behavior, you probably want your "Preferred output format" set to AZW3.
  3. FFF has another option in it's config on the General tab, in the 'Updating Calibre options' section (left middle) for 'Delete other existing formats', you probably want that checked. That cleans any previous converted files on update.
  4. FFF has an option in it's config on the General tab, in the 'Post Processing options' section (left bottom) for 'Automatically Convert new/updated books', you probably want that checked, then FFF will automatically convert to AZW3 for Kindle.

It's not truly necessary to have all these set. Calibre can also convert automatically on send to device, but it tends to do so inefficiently, sending all metadata again to device for every book, and only if there isn't already an acceptable format.
thanks so much, these tips seems to have resolved it!

I've had it before in the past. I found going to ffnet in a browser, relaunching flaresolverr, and trying again after a few minutes resolved it.

A question of my own: I have a fanfic that's just several unrelated oneshots. I'd like to separate them.

EpubSplit will work, but is there an option in ffnet itself to work with this?

Not particularly.

You could use ignore_chapter_url_list to exclude chapters you've already split out into separate books when you update, but it's on you to manage that.

And if it's a site like ffnet that doesn't have unique chapter identifiers it will be screwed up if the author inserts a chapter instead of appending it.

My approach in such cases is to split off what I want to have separate, but still leave the original intact.

Mmmh, doesn't seem to work. I'll see if it solves itself magically by tomorrow, and if not I'll cry
