For a fizzy drink I mostly drink seltzer; I’m not a fan of most “sodas”. I do however like quality root beer and ginger ale. So my question is, is there a decent diet root beer? And more than anything, I’d love to find a good diet tonic water. They’re all so sweet! The thought of a guilt-free G&T is tantalizing. Suggestions welcome!

I'm more of a sparkling mineral water kind of guy, so I don't typically have to worry about a diet variety. But I do have an occasional G&T when a brother-in-law is in town. He came bearing Zevia tonic water last time. Sipping it straight didn't do much for me (though not really a fan of straight-up tonic to begin with), but I would have been hard pressed to notice it was anything different when mixed with Bombay Sapphire if I hadn't seen it first.

As far as diet root beer goes, Virgil's zero sugar is the only thing I've tried that I might fail to flag as "diet" in a blind taste test. They make a zero sugar Ginger Ale, too, but I've not found any in my area.

I'm drinking diet A&W - not quite up to par with the sugared version, but close enough for me - LOTS of ice and drink while chilled.

I’ll have to look for Zevia; I’d not heard of it. A no-cal mixer that tasted good would be a game changer in terms of my summer imbibing.

And I guess I betray my down-market origins; I like branded sparkling mineral water but I’m good with just ordinary seltzer. I have to admit that I don’t like to ice my sparkling drinks; it flats them too fast. I like the effervescence. Bubbles on a scorching day? Ah!

Look for Topo Chico sparkling mineral water. It's not widely available in the States yet, but I hear that might be changing. The bubbles in it are a bit more ice-resistant than most. It's what I like most about it! Not that I ice it that often, but lackluster bubbles is my chief complaint about most other sparkling mineral waters.

Most tonic water is too sweet to drink straight.
A G&T is nice in the summer.
I like bitter, Campari and soda.

I can't see drinking hard liquor with food unless we're talking ice cold vodka or gin with little bits of smelly fish tidbits.
If I'm thirsty-ish I'll have beer with pizza, if not then wine.
For sipping stuff I lean towards brandy more than whisky/whiskey/bourbon.
Friday night is my kick back night, and has been for years. My DW makes pizza (my sauce, her dough, my sausage, and store-bought whole milk mozzarella) so I don't have to cook, and I allow myself a couple of fingers of my favourite single malt whisky. So it's less about how well they do or don't go together, but how much I appreciate them. And it turns out that the smokiness of the Talisker actually goes fairly well with pizza. Though I also have a glass of my faux San Pellegrino for just drinking. Water is for drinking. Whisky is for savouring.

Zevia is excellent. The ginger ale works just fine in mules.
