I'd try a sample. Remember, reviews are the opinions of strangers. I often push my boundaries but never without a sample.

What can I say? I like to live on the edge!

Actually, I don't get the complaints about customer reviews. I wonder if I use them differently than others? I'm not looking for 'This book sux!' or 'Fantastic! Five Stars!!!1!'

On Last Exit, what I got is that though the synopsis makes it sound like urban fantasy, the book is more literary. The author is striving for more than a potboiler. (This was mentioned in both good and bad reviews.) That was enough for me to risk my $3 on it.

The original is set in an optimistic future where humanity has colonized the solar system and sets out to explore Rama when it unexpectedly shows up passing through the Solar system. The sequels start out with all of that gone except the base on the moon, which is still hanging on by a thread. In addition we quickly find out that terrorists nuked Rome between the original and the sequels. As in detonating an actual nuclear weapon. The entire first sequel is devoid of any hope or positivity, focusing more on all the characters being assholes in various ways than on the exploration it's nominally about.

And then it gets worse. Attempted genocide even happens, with humanity doing it, of course. Your reward for suffering through all of this? Well, there isn't one. There is no satisfying ending, Lee's explanation of what Rama is turns out to be really bland.

Save your time and sanity, don't read them. They're truly, horribly awful and the worst books I've read in my entire life. I regret having read them, and they're the only books I can say that about.
I don't see how anyone could call Rendezvous with Rama a classic as it's boring. Nothing really happens. Nothing's really changed. It's just dull as can be. And given that the sequels are worse, then OMG!

Different people have different tastes. I think it is a classic and found it quite fascinating. The sequels ruin part of what was so intriguing about the original - they remove the mystery.

The Gradual by Christopher Priest is $2 on Amazon.com
Warning: "Literary novel". I think this involves the author's Dream Archipelago setting, but familiarity with it is not a prerequisite.
Quote:
A rich and involving tale of the creative mind, the rigours of living under war and the nature of time itself.

Alesandro grows up in Glaund, a fascist state constantly at war with a faceless opponent. His brother is sent off to war; his family is destroyed by grief. Occasionally he catches glimpses of islands in the far distance from the shore, and they feed into the music he composes—music for which he is feted. His search from his brother brings him into contact with the military leadership and suddenly he is a fugitive on the run—he seeks refuge on the islands and his endless travels take him through places and time, bringing him answers where he could not have foreseen them.

The Ogress and the Orphans by Kelly Barnhill is $3 on Amazon.com
Middle grade novel.
Quote:
A fantasy about the power of generosity and love, and how a community suffers when they disappear.

Stone-in-the-Glen, once a lovely town, has fallen on hard times. Fires, floods, and other calamities have caused the people to lose their library, their school, their park, and even their neighborliness. The people put their faith in the Mayor, a dazzling fellow who promises he alone can help. After all, he is a famous dragon slayer. (At least, no one has seen a dragon in his presence.) Only the clever children of the Orphan House and the kindly Ogress at the edge of town can see how dire the town’s problems are.

Then one day a child goes missing from the Orphan House. At the Mayor’s suggestion, all eyes turn to the Ogress. The Orphans know this can’t be: the Ogress, along with a flock of excellent crows, secretly delivers gifts to the people of Stone-in-the-Glen.

But how can the Orphans tell the story of the Ogress’s goodness to people who refuse to listen? And how can they make their deluded neighbors see the real villain in their midst?

7 Euro when i follow the link What a pity, sounds like a nice book
So annoying Kindle/Amazon does not have a 'pricewatch' feature that warns you when the price drops below X.

Are you sure you're visiting Amazon.com and not being redirected to amazon.nl? Amazon.com only sells things in US Dollars.

I use the third-party service https://ereaderiq.com to track ebook prices. Note, however, that it only supports the US and UK Amazon stores.

If you wish, you can try and change your address to the US, but then you'll only be able to buy books from that store, and if you're using a Kindle and reading DRMed books, your old purchases will not be accessible.
