What reason is there to not upgrade to Windows 10? I've done it and there is no downside. Windows 10 is better then Windows 8. Plus you can run the latest Calibre if you want.

Operating systems reaching EOL is a fact of life. Sad perhaps for those still using them, but true. As of February 2022, StatCounter reports that Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 combine for just 4.42 per cent of worldwide Windows users. It's little wonder that MS is ending all support for MS 8.1 in 8 months.

Calibre's support of aging OSes is remarkable, and the only "contempt" on display is yours, in attacking the Calibre developers for having acknowledged the reality of the need to move forward.

I don't get the reason to "hang on" to Windows 8. I understand Windows 7 if it's because the hardware isn't up to much and cannot run Windows 10 all that well. But to stick with Windows 7 & Windows 8 just because you can makes no sense.

If you are going to stick with old versions of Windows when you don't have to, don't complain because software you use can no longer be upgraded. You made the choice not to upgrade. Now either upgrade or live with it.

Windows 8 and 8.1 are end of life and have been abandoned by Microsoft from this year and most software libraries have already stopped supporting it. So sadly yes if in the future you want to use newer version of calibre you will need to update to windows 10.
Btw like others suggested you should move of windows 8 not just because of calibre but because it is end of life and no longer will be provided security updates etc. So it is a risk to run windows 8.
As a last resort if you really need to run a new version of calibre you could probably run a small linux distro off a usb for calibre without touching you win8 install.

VirtualBox is free. Use Xubuntu or something silimar, use a X11 session and enjoy your Calibre 6.

What reason would there be to stay with Windows 8 instead of upgrading to windows 10? I don't understand.

Windows 7, Win10, 11 or Linux are all preferable to Windows 8.x. It was a mad idea to put a GUI for phones and tablets as a desktop Windows. It's the ME version of NT.

Good to know, thank you for your answers Jon and Rantanplan.
While I'm at it, despite this recent disappointment, a huge thank you to Kovid Goyal and all those who help developing Calibre, the best freeware I've ever had the luck to use.

Where and when did I attack Calibre's developpers?

Tell this to my computer. My father, who bought the same model at the same moment, had it "upgraded" to W10. As a result he could not use it anymore, every click resulted into minutes of freezing. Only rolling back to 8.1 thanks to rescue DVDs saved it. W10 is a memory hog. Moreover, it's full of crapwares. I'm plainly satisfied with Windows 8.1, and each and every time I've had to use W10 confirmed my choice.

Thank you for your informative post. Well, it looks like I'll have to leave the stone age sooner or later.

When that happens, you will get a prompt from calibre about it. That has an explanation of what to do and to continue support. Part of that is a suggestion to read the Kobo forum and see what the status is.

But, based on past experience, it will be safe. The issues will be any extra function. That won't be supported, but, it probably won't break anything in with the current support. An example of this was the addition of the Series list. It is still safe to use the version of calibre from before that change on the Kobo, but, it will mean you sideloaded books will not be in the series lists.

And depending on what the change is, it might get into the Kobo Utilities plugin with backwards compatibility. Or it might be possible to add it via a driver in a similar way to what I did for add support for the newer devices for those stuck on calibre 4.23.

What gets done will depend on what the change in the firmware is and when it happens.

When I ran Windows 8.1 (it came with the computer), I found Classic Start Menu. It gave me a real start menu and made Windows 8.1 usable. I then never really noticed that I was on Windows 8.1. It just felt like Windows.

I would not compare Windows 8.1 with WinME. ME was a disaster as it had comparability issues. Someone I used to know back them was a beta tester and said that the gold release (last beta before final release) was more compatible then the release. At least Windows 8.1 was compatible even though the desktop was lousy and needed help (Classic Start Menu).

Crapware is the crap (that you do not want) that comes preinstalled in the computer with whatever version Windows.

Windows 10 does not come with crapware. I've run Windows 10 for years and it runs well. I have Windows 10 running well on a Microsoft Surface Pro 2 which is not the most speedy of hardware. But I do not have Windows 10 freezing at all. The Pro 2 is a 4th gen 1.5 (or 1.6)GHz I5 processor with 8GB ram. Does your computer have better specs? if so, there's no reason for Windows 10 not to work.

John, take your W10 evangelism to Politics and religion. You were asked nicely to 'give it a rest'. Take that advice.

If the computer can't run it, the computer can't run it. I couldn't use 10 on my last computer.
