Incidentally this is likely the same issue that affects the noDRM plugin on macOS.
Disabling DeDRM fixes the issue with FFF importing books into Calibre.

THANK YOU! I was having problems with crashes from copying a format with Action Chains, but also including just plain importing an EPUB through the usual calibre dialogs, and this hint did the trick.

All the people using MacOS and NoDRM need to read this thread:

Download the Nodrm 10.0.3 unofficial version test it on the mac and post the results at git hub.

Thanks for the reply.

Uninstall and install will delete all my reading history, right? (the tick marks under metadata)

Surely there's a way to just cancel Polish Books?

You can no matter if you Press Cancel, it will always require at least one option to be selected in order to change settings.

HOW do we deselect every option and then save it? (as in, want to delete it and stop it polishing my conversions)

Thanks

Polish books only acts when you start it. You select one or more books, press the button, choose the options you want and then press OK to start. Only those books will be affected and nothing happens to other books at other times. The options you selected are remembered as it is likely you will want to use them on another set of books, but, you can change them the next time you want to polish another set of books.

The save/load settings simply saves the list of checked Polish actions and can be loaded again later.

Or have a missed what you are asking?

Ah
that was my mistake. I hadn't realized that the searchbar is "three searchbars" depending if I just enter text or hit the wheel or FT ...
Now the next question raises: I want to search only ONE virtual library or one saved search. Is that possible? (Background - If I want to search for recipes with let's say "chicken", I really don't want to see all novels, where sb is talking about "chicken".) I currently see only the solution to export all my cooking book into a separate library.

Do your search in the main calibre book list, then click FT and select the "Restrict searched books" checkbox.

But her laptop can run Windows 10 as any computer running Windows 8 can run Windows 10. So just upgrade to Windows 10. Easiest solution (IMHO).

Cancel Debug mode?

I selected restart in debug mode.
Now every time I shut down I get the Log and it is still in debug mode.
(the menu item to reboot in Debug mode is not there so I assume this is not a toggle and it is truly in debug mode)

@theducks: Doesn't happen for me. A reboot of your computer should fix it.

As soon as I posted here, it is back to normal

Your system has GNU libc version 2.27. The caliber binaries require at least version: 2.31 (released on 2020-02-01). Update your system.
The error message is quite clear. You need to update GNU libc.

Got a 9 year old laptop, that I will keep using for a couple more years or until it dies... Had no plans to make a 8->10 upgrade on it.

Guess I will stick with Calibre 5 for a while longer.
Well, Calibre 6 is a good excuse to upgrade to Windows 10 as the upgrade is still available and free.
