Bracketed numbers appearing in epubs

Frequently I come across breaks in the epub text that show [1/3], and later on, [2/3], and finally [3/3]... Right now I am reading a book with seven breaks ... [*/7] ... Why is this, and how can I prevent this weirdness. Thanks! |

If the epub is not DRMmed, learn to use either Sigil or calibre's ebook editor to remove those annoying bits.

I use a Regex search in the Calibre Editor to remove them all in one go. Test Regex with find first!

...in addition... sometimes footnotes use [x] type notation...although I haven't found any, yet, that use [x/x]

@Magnus, are those section breaks or footnotes? Can you give us a sample of the relevant HTML/CSS code?

This is the quandry. I opened the epub editor and came to the point where one of the bracketed breaks appears, and it's unclear why this is happening. I'm not seeing anything that accounts for what I am seeing in Moon Reader.

If you don't see anything like that in the code, it could simply be a function of moonreader. It could be displaying something along the lines of [pages/pages remaining] or [section/sections remaining]. Id give your moonreader settings a gander and see if there is something like that in there.

I had to read this multiple times to see what's going on. I, too, have used Moon Reader and have seen those and did some research. Upon my deep digging to find the issue, it turns out Moon Reader tends to break up file sizes it sees as "too big" into sections. For some reason, it can't render an internal file over a certain size as one continuous section and breaks up larger files into sections. Thus the brackets, or "section breaks." This is a limitation of MR which I find rather ridiculous.

So, the easy solution is for bookmakers to know their craft? Or for buyers to know how to modify their ePUB files? Hitch

Magnus, where is it these eBooks that show the bracketed number come from? I've seen some self-published Kindle eBooks were it was all one big HTML file.

And there are still people using these older Readers. So keeping to that size per HTML file will save you a lot of hassle.
