Hi everyone - thanks for the kind words - indeed also an offer of a donation! There have been a number of suggestions that I should get the warranty now and swap it out - unfortunately, I'd feel bad about doing this, pesky morals! I've decided I can live with it for the time being - it's kind of fun guessing the missing word in the top right corner, and if the book is suitably engrossing, I find I stop noticing the damage after a while. I guess I've done the electronic equivalent of dropping a paperback in the bath.
I'm going to bank the $200 and use it as guilt-free Kindle 3 money, when it appears. Of course, should an Amazon rep happen to read this post, and feel the need to stop me saying to all "It's an awesome product, but this is what happens if you drop it...." |

I am very sorry to hear of the original poster's accident, but why ever do you think that customer service are likely to replace it? If you buy a glass ornament from a shop, take it home and drop it, would you expect the shop you bought it from to replace it free of charge?

I think one issue is the ergonomic design of these readers. To keep our hands off the screen and off the page advance button we must grip them by their thin edges. They need a much solider hand grip. I originally had a Cybook. It survived several drops, but when it fell and impacted a certain way it was too much for it. I think any of these e-ink devices are prone to this depending on how they land. This is probably the real advantage of a flexible screen (as will appear in future e-ink book readers) -- It's not that I want to be able to bend my reader, its that I want it to flex during impact instead of breaking. |

There could be a market for a rubber or silicon bumper that goes around the edge - would provide "grip" and some impact absorption. Impractible for the K1 but could work with the K2 with some cutouts.

I always keep my CyBook in its case, which provides quite reasonable protection. I often fall asleep at night while reading, and wake up in the morning to find the CyBook on the floor. It must have survived literally dozens of such falls. I certainly wouldn't like to risk that with the "bare" CyBook. |

I hate to say this, but I will anyway. This sort of thing is why a cover should be on at all times unless there is a need for the cover to be off. So those who feel they prefer to hold their reader without a cover is just waiting for it to be damaged.

Mine was in a neoprene Belkin cover - the K2 being almost friction-free simply slid out. Considering 99% of my reading is done on a futon 6 inches above a deep-pile carpet, you could argue that I was spectacularly unlucky to drop it on the only wooden floor in the place, during the 1% time when it was higher than 1ft above floor level.
I do wonder whether a rubberized surround would have made it more reluctant to slide as freely as it did... |
