They never deliver KFX, but maybe unless the target Kindle supports KFX, you don't get azw3/KF8. So the KK3 only gets KF7 even though it does support KF8.

The PW3 MOSTLY gets azw3/KF8, but some titles have been azw (47) and two mobi of 339 titles. I've two azw4, no idea what they are.

I suspect if docx or epub uploaded the PW3 gets azw3 and the other files were Mobi uploads. Strangely Raymond Fiest's Magician is azw.

I remember there was one download for PW3 that was .azw and wouldn't "work" in Calibre till I renamed it .mobi, though it worked on the PW3.

I had the PC app for a while on XP years ago because some titles would only download for it. Unavailable on eink. All where badly formatted fixed layout or print replica, useless unless on paper. So I don't download even "free" if doesn't work for PW3 (set as default).

I and wife only read epubs on Kobo.
I know there are still Mobi only eBooks on Amazon. I find it odd that downloading with a web browser if you own a K3/KK given it handles KF8.

As for AZW4, it's a PDF in an Amazon container.

Yes, makes no sense to me. Except maybe ORIGINALLY the KK3 didn't do KF8?

The Kindle DXG (B009) came out after KK3, but lacks RAM and is basically just upgrade of screen of DX. It doesn't do KF8.

My theory is you don't get KF8 unless the Kindle was released originally with KF8, suggesting that if a Kindle reports current FW version, the download system ignores that and only goes by model number, not FW version.

Would that be 4th Gen and later, or 5th Gen and later?

Thanks. So probably 4th Gen and later as target gives KF8, but only if there is a KF8, for target if selected for Download and USB Transfer. I've made the PW3 be default.

For amazon ebook purchase, it used to be possible to select "Download and Transfer via USB" as the purchase destination. A few weeks or months ago, this selection started getting ignored and the book was sent to the default device. It is now necessary to go to the contents and devices page, find the book, open a menu, and select "Download and Transfer via USB", unless it has recently been fixed. This has been discussed in some other thread.

So, since amazon is going to send it anyway, I save some steps by spoofing a lower firmware version and the book is sent directly as KF8/azw3 instead of KFX.
As a Calibre user I have always have had all books sent to K4PC as the default device. Than had Calibre suck it in.

I have never seen that it matters what default device I use (I have multiple Android devices, a Windows desktop, a Surface and likely many old devices that are no longer used). I can still download books via K4PC on my Surface or desktop.

Am I missing something? Why do others worry about what their default device is?

For me, I fire up K4PC, download my new books and then transfer the downloaded .azw files into Calibre. Is there some automated process that does this?

That's exactly what I used to do. Now, instead of using K4PC, I use "Download & Transfer via USB" from the "Manage My Content" section of Amazon's website. I find this faster than using K4PC - part of that may be because I run Linux, so I had to run K4PC under Wine, and that slows things down a bit. Plus, you are dependent on running a very old version of K4PC that has it's own key that is separate from your Paperwhite (or whatever Kindle reading device you use). I still have my K4PC installation showing as one of my "devices" on Amazon so I could go back to that method if I desired. But I can't come up with any reason to do that. "Download & Transfer via USB" works perfectly fine for me.

Me too since 1998, but only Linux on laptop apart from VMs since Jan 2017. Fortunately we have physical Kindles, mostly bought before we migrated to Kobo. They don't need to work, just remain registered.

You can tell Calibre to look in the K4PC folder and automaticaly suck in any books it finds there.

Under Preferences/adding books/automatic import/ what ever folder you want it to look in.

You can also tell it to automaticly convert to another format if you want it to.

Hey thanks! I'll go check that out!

That would be super handy, but I skipped it as I often find a higher resolution cover when I update the metadata.

Yes, that would definitely present a problem for Download and Transfer via USB. Bummer.
