Finished "Neverwhere" by Neil Gaiman. The first book book I read of Neil Gaiman was "The Ocean at the End of the Lane", a book I really liked. I looked forward to reading more of his books. "American Gods" was a dud for me as well as Good Omens, a book he co-wrote with Terry Pratchett.

I gave "Neverwhere" 3 stars. I won't be reading more of his books.

I started, and ended, with American Gods. So I guess i'm happy for you that you got one good book out of him

Just finished the 6th volume of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Man, the 80's were a happening time!

I find I have no desire to continue reading it. Abandoned. Also discarded the other 10 Bond novels I recently bought. Sigh.

I've never understood the "group read" concept. Why not read something that you enjoy instead?

Of course this doesn't apply to school, where you are told to read a specific book for a class. But a voluntary group reading is an alien concept to me. There are just too many variations in individuals decisions about what makes a good book for them. I remember my mom, who was a member of a local book club, struggling to finish books that she hated. On one hand, a book club might be a good way to discover new stuff that you never knew you'd like, or never knew existed. But on the other hand, why force yourself to read something that you can't stand?

Conan the Champion by John Maddox Roberts. Sometimes pulp is good and sometimes it is mediocre. Sadly, this leant more towards the mediocre this time.

Currently reading Record of Blood the third in Sabrina Flynn's Ravenwood series. It's an interesting read, using backstory to move the personal and professional relationships of the two leads forward. There are two little gems that have me leaning toward it being at least 4.5/5 for me:

The female lead made a choice to withhold vital information from the male lead, her investigative partner. This had me all and muttering "use your words!". Then later, this:

I’m beginning to feel like I’m caught in an idiotic Shakespearean play where the characters refuse to communicate with each other. I’m guilty of it, too.

and I was all

The other little thing that REALLY impressed me was this

“You know Chinese, too?” Tobias asked.
“Cantonese,” Riot corrected.

THAT was swoonworthy! The ignorant insistence that the different (many mutually unintelligible) members of the Sinitic language family are "dialects" is wrongheaded and one of my major bêtes noires. To see that very widespread Anglocentric assumption called out like this was a delight.

Just finished the Silent Speaker, a Nero Wolfe mystery by Rex Stout. I have to say, I think Wolfe and his sidekick Archie Goodwin are some of my favorite characters ever.

I loved the Nero Wolfe series. I have them all in paper.
I just finished Tony Hillerman's Skinwalkers and at the end of A Thief of Time. These are 7 & 8 in his Leaphorn and Chee series. These are excellent books and I highly recommend them.
