That's exactly what I used to do. Now, instead of using K4PC, I use "Download & Transfer via USB" from the "Manage My Content" section of Amazon's website. I find this faster than using K4PC - part of that may be because I run Linux, so I had to run K4PC under Wine, and that slows things down a bit. Plus, you are dependent on running a very old version of K4PC that has it's own key that is separate from your Paperwhite (or whatever Kindle reading device you use). I still have my K4PC installation showing as one of my "devices" on Amazon so I could go back to that method if I desired. But I can't come up with any reason to do that. "Download & Transfer via USB" works perfectly fine for me.

Me too since 1998, but only Linux on laptop apart from VMs since Jan 2017. Fortunately we have physical Kindles, mostly bought before we migrated to Kobo. They don't need to work, just remain registered.
