Yes that's correct. Your Kobo is not seeing the screenshots because it's not looking for them. You have to force the Kobo to scan so it sees new content.

Are there other ways to trigger a scan? E.g. via import from KoboCloud, deletion of files, reboot etc.?

Why are you trying to make it more difficult? NickelMenu will start the scan process very easily.

The only workaround I've found so far is to force nickel to rescan all books like this:

Code:
menu_item :main :Rescan books :nickel_misc :rescan_books
You could always make the screenshot trigger option execute multiple commands; both the toggle and the rescan

Both reboot and USB eject from a computer will trigger a scan.

But it's easier to trigger the scan with NIckelMenu, and the results will be identical.

I'm sorry if this has been answered already but I was wondering if nm can be used to open specific collections (?maybe via a chain action). For example, I would like to open my collection of SF books without having to go back to Collections and opening the SF folder. Instead, I would like to directly open that collection from any nm area ie from inside a book being read.

Thanks for any replies.

It's not currently possible, but I suppose a generator could be added for a filtered list of collections.

That's what NickelDBus was made for. Because, no, you cannot do it directly with NickelMenu.

If you can code what you want to do in a .sh script, you can do it with NickelMenu. That's how I am running KOReader so I don't have to keep installing KFMon every firmware update.
