If you missed this a couple of years ago, it's now £1.89 at Kindle UK. Still not a bad price. The link below is still good...

The Stately Home Murder (apa The Complete Steel) is the third in the series and has dropped to £0.90 at Kindle UK - one of the rare sizable Open Road price drops in the UK. The webpage also indicates this is a "Rue Morgue Classic British Myster[y]" - I don't know if this means Open Road has picked up the rights to use the US "Rue Morgue" publisher name, or has just created one of their own, but in any case, the book will be the same .

And eighteen-ish months later, here it is again...

All seven titles in the Inspector Pekkala series are now £0.99 at Kindle UK. There are new series links (see below), and note that the numbering and order are mixed up on the series webpage. And, per SYKM, there are seven titles, not nine.

Amazon UK (entire series): https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0991MBGZ1
Amazon UK/Smile (entire series): https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0991MBGZ1

And, there is one title, Berlin Red, which shows up on the series webpage at £7.00, but which has a separate link for a version at £0.99.

  • Eye of the Red Tsar
  • Shadow Pass, apa The Red Coffin
  • Archive 17, apa Siberian Red
  • The Red Moth
  • The Beast in the Red Forest, £2.49
  • Red Icon
  • Berlin Red, £2.49
There was an omnibus of the first three titles floating around on sale a while back, and some of the later ones have been on sale before individually, so check carefully before you buy! I've read and enjoyed the first three titles in this series - see "omnibus on sale" above . Also per SYKM, the second one was a finalist for a Historical Dagger back when it was published.

Death of a Red Heroine is on sale in the US for $1.99, and not too badly priced at £2.99 in the UK. The Kindle UK link below is still good, and I've added the others.

Kobo UK: https://www.kobo.com/gb/en/ebook/death-of-a-red-heroine

HOWEVER, be forewarned that the rest of the series hovers around $7.99 to $11.99 in the US, and titles only very rarely go on sale. So if you like this one, and want to read the rest of the series in e-book, you'll either need to be very patient, or cross your fingers that you can find them at your library. Or, of course, spend a lot of money .

They are a little more reasonably priced in the UK, with several at £3.99 and £4.99, and one is actually on sale for £1.99 right now (and discountable at Kobo).

Yep ^^^

One of my favorite memories from one of the earlier books (can't remember which) was a scene with a Mandarin and a Cantonese speaker "talking" - except that they had to do it in writing, because the written characters are so similar (identical?), but the pronunciations are very different. And then, a few months after reading this, I was on a business trip in Hong Kong, and I saw this very thing happen at a ticket booth in the subway - the ticket seller pulled out a piece of paper and a pen, and the two people were writing to communicate. It's always super cool when background comes to life like that!

If you've missed the omnibus of early Simenon/Maigret titles that has been on sale a couple of times in the not-too-distant past, here's your chance to pick up one of the books on sale individually. The blurb says The Hanged Man of Saint-Pholien, apa The Crime of Inspector Maigret, apa
Maigret and the Hundred Gibbets, is the third Maigret title, but SYKM says it's the fourth, and I usually go with SYKM . In any case, whatever you call it, it's $1.99 right now at both Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00DMCUWWY
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...aint-pholien-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
“One of the greatest writers of the twentieth century . . . Simenon was unequaled at making us look inside, though the ability was masked by his brilliance at absorbing us obsessively in his stories.” —The Guardian

Inspector Maigret finds himself tangled up in a dreadful death, in Georges Simenon’s haunting tale about the lengths to which people will go to escape from guilt

While in Brussels on police business, Inspector Jules Maigret witnesses a strange act: a scruffy-looking man counts out a large amount of currency and mails it to a Paris address. His instincts tell him there is more to this moment than meets the eye, and following an impulse, Maigret boards the man’s train, following him to Germany via Amsterdam. But in the course of his investigation, something goes horribly awry, and the man ends up dead.

Maigret is devastated by the inadvertent role he played, but his own remorse is overshadowed by the discovery of the sordid events that drove the desperate man to the edge. In The Hanged Man of Saint-Pholien, Georges Simenon examines the terrible weight guilt can place on a man’s conscience and the tragedies that can result when that weight gets to be too heavy to bear.
