Light bulbs were almost the FIRST consumer device.
Previously, light has the peril of fire from spillage or leakage.
Basic Human needs of Light and Heat.
All the rest came after.

FWIW the house I was raised in had a Coal stove in the Kitchen (My dad installed an Electric one, so I do not remember coal in the kitchen ever being used.)
Many neighbors still had Ice Boxes (Ours was unused in the basement). Deep frozen was kept at the meat locker down on Main Street, because of the size and complexity of the cooling plant. (FWIW We were 30Mi from NTC)

I will agree many moves by Apple, were just greed. releasing 8G devices when 16G chips were pretty common (just not rock bottom $)

I think beer was first consumer product. Then books.

Some say "ladies of the night".

Oil lamps predate electric lamps, though oddly mantels to dramatically increase brightness of gas lamps and oil lamps using pressurised vaporised kerosene/paraffin came after carbon filament electric bulbs. Edison didn't invent light bulbs, but his company did invent a better carbon fibre (Platinum and tungsten already known but too expensive for different reasons).
Kerosene only replaced canola (rape seed oil), sunflower, olive and whale oil for lamps after gas lighting and electricity had already arrived in cities.

Batteries predated electric lights. Used for telegraphs and also indicator boards and electric bells.

The second Paperwhite I bought in 2013 is still working. I use it to play the old active content games sometimes.

My 12 year old Kindle with buttons, not touch screen, is still going strong. My paperwhite is about 5 years old, and ditto.

I passed along my first generation Kindle to my Mom several years ago. She told me that it finally died about a year or so ago.

The only device I've had die on me was my own fault. A couple Kindle versions ago I wasn't using the device very much and I failed to charge it promptly after the battery ran down. By the time I got around to trying to charge it, the battery wouldn't work.

I'm still using a Kindle Gen 3 (Kindle Keyboard). I haven't tried to quantify battery life, but it still lasts long enough that it's not a major concern.

I did get the message from Amazon that the ability to send new purchases to it is being killed, but I'll still have USB transfer. Or maybe fully transition to my Voyage.

Cell phones before the iPhone had an easily replaceable battery. Cell phones after the iPhone eventually stopped having an easily replaceable battery. SO you'd buy a cell phone and it would last for a long time because you could replace the battery. Apple decided that once the battery got bad enough the phone would have to be replaced. This meant forced obsolescence. And we've been living with battery powered devices that cannot easily have the battery replaced even though there is nothing wrong other then it needs a new battery.

In fact, it’s only buying from the Keyboard that’s being killed. You will still be able to buy from a browser or another device and download wirelessly to the Keyboard.

And yet, here I am with two working iPhones, neither with an original battery. Replaced easily at the local shopping centre.

But you had to pay someone to replace the battery. Before the iPhone, anyone could have replaced a cell phone battery.

First glued in phone battery.

Apple hardly invented anything ever. They are really a marketing company.
