Looks to work for me. Replace both calibre app icon and then with a 1024x1024:

calibre.app/Contents/Resources/resources/images/library.png

Maybe on macOS it could use whatever is set as app icon as other apps. Is this where it's done?

Dear kovidgoyal,

This suggestion doesn't work. Is there anything we could do in order to help you make a macOS icon consistent with the OS's design language?

Thank you!

Hey there,

It's been more than a year now. Can't be that difficult to change an application's icon, can it? If so, what can I do to help?

Start by designing the icon and see if it's approved.

There are already enough MacOS-styled icons here: https://macosicons.com/#/calibre

Pick one that you approve of and add it to the application?

FWIW, At that link it says free but I could not find a license file anyplace. Are these icons in the public domain? A clear license is a requirement before adding anything to any source tree.

Hi there,

Update after another update, we're at 6.8 today and there's been no change to the macOS icon. I'm starting to suspect that our beloved developer simply doesn't care about it/me/esthetics?

Anyway, I started a discussion with the folks over at https://macosicons.com. Check it out here: https://github.com/elrumo/macOS_Big_...scussions/1382

zkvvoob, you are sounding somewhat annoyed

But: not everyone shares your views. I am a macOS user myself and I like the icon. Not everything must and should change just because Apple invented some new colours.

Of course, you are free to change the icon for yourself - just follow the way described some post before. And try to keep it friendly ...

If you'd actually read the thread and my replies (or had tried to change the icon yourself), you would have seen that it was actually impossible - the moment Calibre starts, it reverts back to its original icon.

And it's not a question of "just because Apple invented some new colours" - I'm talking about design consistency.

That said, I agree - people should have the right to follow or not said design. Which is why I'd be thrilled if Calibre behaved like all other applications and accepted the custom icon I put.

What about his previous post here suggested to you that he wanted to change it?

(Personally I like the current icon and have absolutely no inclination to want it changed.)

It's open source. Do whatever you want to it. But demanding that other people do it for you isn't likely to get you anywhere.

@zkvvoob have you been able to change your dock icon yet?

What @democrite mentioned above works. I'm currently running macOS Ventura 13.5.1 with Calibre 6.25.0.

I know @kovidgoyal has suggested overriding the icons using calibre configuration folder and creating .png files under a 'resources/images' folder. This approach will work for the other icons inside calibre app but not the dock icon.

In case there are other macOS users who are trying to change their dock icon, here are the steps to get this to work.

1. After you download or create a calibre.icns file, convert the .icns to a .png format (can Google for online converter) to 1024 x 1024 pixels.

2. Rename the file to 'library.png'. Then navigate to 'calibre.app/Contents/Resources/resources/images/' folder and copy the new file to that location to replace the original png. You can ignore the 'lt.png' file, it does not affect the dock icon image.

Keep in mind that every time you update calibre app with a new version the dock image will be overwritten with the original image file. So you'll have to update it manually or create a zshell script to copy the new png dock image over. Hope that helps!

I’m using the same icon. It would be nice if a change could be made to use library.png from a users library folder. Maybe even make that icon default on macOS or come up with something that matches the new icon size and style that has been default on macOS for some years.
