Solution is to do a Reset, so the local catalog gets rebuilt from scratch. I have verified on 3 of my Kindles. I had at least 4 (out of 3200+) with the issue, and probably a number of other ones which I had yet to stumble over. It fixed those 4 and presumably all of these others as well.

You can also open the book by finding it in Kindle Store and clicking Read Now button but that gets old very fast.

I’ve come across updates on the Amazon UK site. I’m in Canada, my PW 10th Gen was purchased in the US. My Kindle is at 15.4.2 and isn’t showing an option to update. Is updating to 15.4.3.01 advisable, doing so manually by connecting the kindle to a computer?

Amazon took down 5.14.3 a few days after its release, and rolled out 5.14.3.0.1 just a couple of weeks ago. Sometimes it takes months for updates to reach your device since Amazon does them by batches.

If everything's working just fine you can try waiting for the update. If you already have the updated UI there's nothing much that has changed.

I always manually download and update my devices. I have never waited on the automatic updates. It has caused issues a few times, but not t also helps the developers understand and hopefully fix bugs. I am retired now but was an IT Professional so I use to do tons of beta testing, but now I wait for the released updates. Which I am sorry to say is really betas anymore.

Well 5.14.12 is probably the last jailbreakable version for a while.

I’m actually having a problem with only one book, same as described by that Reddit thread. I believe it started after the update to 15.14.2. Maybe I will give the manual update a go. I would like to get the book working properly without having to go all “scorched earth” and doing a reset. I’ve got my entire library on that kindle (because I travel and I want my library available when wifi isn’t available), and redoing the whole thing would be a major nuisance.

I think it is unlikely an update will fix this. Reset does work to fix it.

You might start thinking about the steps you would need to do to restore after reset, for example, copying the content off would at least save you the trouble of downloading it all after you re-register the Kindle: you can just copy it all back.

Perhaps if Kindle is jail broken, you can just delete the catalog database and leave content in place, and catalog will rebuild (after Sync).

The issue has to do with the library catalog database having a bad entry for the given books. It’s likely you have an issue with more than one of your books, and it doesn’t matter whether you’ve downloaded it or not.

In my case, I knew of 4 out of some 3,400 in my library, but I cannot imagine there were not a number of others I didn’t happen to stumble over.

I was able to use the setup with smartphone feature (using Kindle app) to re-register and set up WiFi in a minute or so. Then depending on how large your library is, it will take awhile to re-build the catalog (an hour or more) and of course re-index whatever content you put on it, which could take hours.

I would apply latest update before all of this (unless you have some reason not to).

*kicks self* I've been putting off jailbreaking because you lose the entire contents of the Kindle when you do it -- but obviously if I do that first I don't lose a thing. And it's so obvious and I don't know why I never thought of doing it -- probably because backing up a Kindle that way is largely pointless because of the DRM, but even DRMed KFX can be copied off a Kindle and copied back to the *same Kindle* without incident, so, not that useless after all.
