Just for the benefit of anyone who didn't read it on the thread for The Infinite Sea, I uploaded a new Mobipocket build of Neptune Crossing today, which I pray is finally free of the hidden text problem that's been plaguing me. Thanks for pointing it all out to me (I think).

It's amazing how many times you can fix something and still not get it right. Hopefully, now, it is.

At least I found the hidden text in the HTML before I sent in the lRF edition.

I just finished reading Neptune Crossing this afternoon on the flight from DFW to Bradley International. Though I had downloaded both the MobiPocket and Sony versions, I read this on the Sony 505 -- primarily because I started it yesterday and wanted to read in the car using the light-wedge cover.

I really enjoyed this book and now I'm hooked on the series. I really need to know more about the aliens and what they're all about, and I'm hoping that is revealed in the next couple of books.

Jeffrey --- thanks so much for bringing this book to us at MobileRead. I've placed an order for the paperback from Amazon.com because I want to offer it as my swap book this month. I'm disappointed that Amazon doesn't have the book itself in stock and I'm having to buy it from one of their resellers.

I'm glad to hear you liked it! I hope you enjoy the rest of the series.

The first three books have been out of print in paper for some time. (Which was what got me started on the whole ebook download project in the first place.)

Thanks for the good word.

Jeffrey, I found out what the problem is in the ePub edition of Neptune Crossing with the text falling off the right side when going to a larger enough font.

The places that have the >>> are using <pre> tags which in ADE does not work well. Even desktop ADE has the same problem. It's an easy fix actually to remove the <pre> tags, change them to <div> tags, add in a <br /> to the end of each line and go from there. Then the lines wrap properly if need be.

Jeez, I had forgotten all about that problem! Thanks, Jon! (For both the reminder and the solution.)

I have never understood the <div> tag, but I'll take your word for it. And do you mean put a <br> at the end? I'm not familiar with the <br/> tag, and am guessing that was a typo. Either that, or I'm about to learn a new tag.

Can I just unzip the files, make the changes, and rezip it all and rename to epub? (Ack, I just looked. There's a file for each chapter. You don't happen to remember what chapter the problem occurred in, do you?)

<br/> is just the <br> tag as it needs to be written in XHTML.

Since there are not too many chapters I would load each one into Wordpad and search for <pre and then replace pre with div and the </pre> with </div> and then at the end of each line in between the pre tag, add a <br /> to the end.

Also, I'd check the other books in the series for possibly the same issue.

A <div> tag is really nothing more than a marker tag. It doesn't indicate any specific formatting. Usually it is given a name or class that does have a meaning withing the CSS document that rules it.

I've gone through all the HTML and replaced the pre to div and added the <br />. I'll email you a copy.

You are very welcome.

Take a look at say chapter 3 to see what I did to fix things. The <pre> tag causes the lines to not wrap. In a web browser, that's ok as we can scroll. But in ADE both desktop and mobile, there is no scrolling left/right. So if the lines end up too long, they just get cut off.

A proper working <pre> tag should wrap at the right edge. A few implementations do this for devices that can't scroll. It is still useful to provide pseudo tabbing etc.

Yep. I checked it out late last night on my 700, and it looks great. (I checked before and after in desktop ADE and saw what you're talking about.)

I've put the fixed version up online in place of the original.

I'll have a look at the other ePub books in the series and have a go at fixing them if need be. It really wasn't hard to do.
