It's humans or mankind, though why isn't it Human, like Orc, Elf, Dwarf or Hobbit?

It's worse for French women because in English most nouns have no gender, but all French ones do. So poor maligned Morgan is Le Fay (male, and originally no relative to Arthur). See French for principal or company director.

We use to have actress and aviatrix. Someone decided they should be male: actor, aviator. What next? Abolish princess, seamstress, queen etc? Are Waitresses and Monitoresses gone?

Unfortunately historically even English, not just Italian, German, French, Irish, Spanish and Portuguese is gendered for many titles and often he or man or men or mankind rather than it or they stood for men and women, boys and girls. You see some modern documents simply replace he with she, rather than maybe (s)he.

There are no easy answers, except if you are a man, don't be misogynistic or patriarchal or mansplaining.

Also in England I think it's insulting to call a woman a girl, but in rural Ireland a granny of 90 can be called a girl. Or even a fine girl ye are.

I'm just correcting an incorrect word. It's noting to do with political correctness.

OTOH, we should realize that marginalized does not mean what it used to mean. The latest list of marginalized groups that I ran across included:
  • GLBTQQIAPTS
  • Senior citizens
  • Persons living in poverty
  • The homeless
  • Racial/Cultural minorities
  • Military combat veterans
  • Persons of below average intelligence
  • Hearing, visually, and physically challenged persons
  • Persons with a serious and persistent mental illness
  • Persons with cognitive impairments
  • Gamblers
  • Substance abusers
  • Autism spectrum persons
  • Gifted and talented persons
  • Persons with disfigurements
  • Sex offenders
  • Felons
Please note that in North America, women were not considered as a marginalized group since they constitute a majority of the population (51.1%) and the original definition of marginalized was minorities and persons living in poverty. The current usage seems to be that anyone is now free to call themselves marginalized.

BTW, speaking of silly terms, I've adapted to LGBTQ and LGBTQ+ but we are now told to use GLBTQQIAPTS. Why not the simpler GSM (gender and sexuality minorities) instead of the continually expanding GLBTQ etc. etc.?

According to several dictionaries, humankind is correct and refers to humanity or the human race and is a synonym for mankind though that synonym has disappeared from recent editions.

To quote from a GC publication:

Quote:
mankind, humankind, human race

Choose gender-inclusive nouns such as people, the human race, humankind or humanity rather than mankind.

In the history of humankind (or humanity or the human race), there have been few despots who were loved by their people.

Would Neil Armstrong have said, “One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind” in these gender-sensitive times?

For what it matters, there's a bit of a thing in the disability community about person-first language vs. identity-first language. I think most of us prefer identity-first ("disabled person") rather than identity-first ("person with a disability") though there's exceptions.

But for god's sake don't use ridiculous euphemisms like "persons of different abilities." Wait, what's my 'different ability'? Do I get to pick? Laser eyes sound cool.

Or even worse, "handi-capable."

I didn't generate that list and will admit that I find several of the items in it to be strangely constructed and rather vague at best.

Personally, I vote for the making annoying people disappear power.

If we’re picking abilities I’d take controllable telepathy.

One of those “I’m rubber and you’re glue” situations, methinks. Feel free not to read, nor to get offended by, threads or posts that don’t interest you.

But I must add that people generally aren’t seeking to be offended. Because actually, they’d rather not. Don’t blame the victim.

Yes, because outrage culture is very much not a thing which runs rampant on social media.

And victim of what exactly here? Possible poor quote choice, while any cursory glance at the ad would have given light to the intent and meaning?

As to if Wilde would have included women were there any who were historians in his time or were he living in modern times we’ll never know. Of course given what we do know of Wilde, I’d rather doubt he’d want to exclude women and was only speaking on matters as they were. Unless there’s some evidence he was a minsogynst I’m unaware of, feel free to provide any you’re aware of.

I don't know where you got this list; a search does't find it anywhere for me. And over a third of it can be condensed into one listing, "disabled people". Several of the others are very obviously not generally accepted.

I'm getting exactly nine hits for GLBTQQIAPTS, so no, this is not in common use and not what "we are told to use" now. The common terms I see are LGBTQIA+, and the more pronounceable QUILTBAG.
