Meanwhile one of the few pluses of upgrading to 5.14.2 (from 5.13.4) to me was that the battery life on my Oasis 3 went massively longer: I'm getting nearly a week of heavy reading between charges now. Apparently no reindexing happened, or at least if it did the battery wasn't discharged by it.

I have an unregistered Paperwhite 5, after updating, every time I open the library I get a popup saying Cloud Not Available ... and I can choose Cancel or Register |

OTOH, remember the source of the link. I take anything written by Michael Kozlowski who tends to like sensational posts to drive traffic to GoodeReader with a large pinch of salt. Last edited by DNSB; 05-10-2022 at 11:52 AM. | |

I got the update manually because in all the years I've owned 4 different kindles I've only ever received a single update for one of them OTA. I keep wifi off to save power most of the time and I've never seen a notification that it's downloading anything. On pre-11th gen kindles downloading ~250megs would take quite some time - this new model seems much quicker at everything. I notice it has a power saving mode; if I use that but leave wifi on do I get the best of both worlds; automatic updates/syncing etc but sensibly handled (ie check for 1 second every 24 hours or so then turn wifi back off?) Yeah, I was first exited about 5.14.3 because I would be able to use the new UI without having to register (it's remote-enabled on 5.14.2 so I need to login to get the new UI), but the Cloud not available prompt killed it for me.

Can't you just reset the kindle to the factory settings? Wouldn't that be like downgrading?

Unlike Kobo's ereaders, where the true factory reset goes back to the firmware version shipped from the factory, a reset on a Kindle simply removes all content and leaves the firmware alone.

I am seeing a couple of interesting issues that pertain to certain books in one of my collections: - one says it is Downloaded, but cannot be opened, and it shows only 3 items in context menu: Mark as read, Remove from Collection, and Permanently delete. If I switch to List or Grid view, it does not show up. It does show up in Home (because I supposedly just downloaded it) and has the same truncated context menu there. - another one (happens to be Print Replica, which cannot be read with a Kindle) shows in the Collection, and also has the more limited context menu (with addition of Download item). Again, it only displays when viewing the Collection.Tapping Download eventually leads to an error and so it will not actually download. Restart didn’t have any effect. Wonder how many other books in my library have similar issues. It is the same situation on another Kindle, however I will avoid trying to download the supposedly compatible title to that one. |

I see that annoying popup that says Cloud not available wasn't fixed. So no reason to update for me, I need to wait for option do downgrade to 5.14.2. I will never install an update again if there is no downgrade option.
