He's not on the job, but on a personal mission.

Darkness falls. The river churns into rapids. Shots ring out through the forest.

Something Wicked is the first in the Andrew Basnett series by EX Ferrars. It's on sale right at Kindle US for $1.99.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09FBZ8ZH4
Kindle US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B09FBZ8ZH4

Spoiler:
Quote:
A retired botanist comes to stay in a charming English village, where murder and blackmail disturb the bucolic peace in this mystery series debut.

No longer on the sprightly side of seventy, Professor Andrew Basnett is looking forward to retirement and finally digging into the biography he plans to write about an obscure seventeenth century botanist. While his flat in town is renovated, he settles into a little village in Oxfordshire where he’s borrowed his nephew’s cottage. It sounds perfectly pleasant, even with the village murderess living right up the road.

Basnett’s nephew informs him that Pauline Hewison’s case never came to trial because she had the perfect alibi. Not entirely comforted, Basnett is more unnerved when a blizzard knocks out the power and provides a dark, snowy night just like the one six years ago when someone shot Charles Hewison through the head. It doesn’t help that there’s been another murder and that Pauline, once again, has motive to spare.

Simon Brett's Mrs Pargeter series is my second-favorite of his series, after the Blotto & Twinks books. And now it seems that Brett must have gotten the rights back to some of the early titles, because the first four have come out in Joffe Books e-book editions. Which is a good thing, since Joffe tends to put books on sale pretty often, and Joffe books are usually pretty reasonably priced to start with anyway. (And if you have a KU subscription, they are all KU as well...)

Now here's the first book in the series, A Nice Class of Corpse, on sale for $0.99/£0.99 in the US/UK.

Spoiler:
Quote:
Meet Mrs Melita Pargeter, a vivacious widow whose mystery-solving talents come in handy when a murderer stalks a hotel for well-to-do retirees.

She checks into the Devereux Hotel on England’s sunny south coast. Where secrets hide behind every door and the sea-views are to die for . . .

Her arrival, in a fancy car and a flurry of silk, causes much excitement among the elderly residents.

By next morning, they have something new to talk about — the discovery of a crumpled body at the foot of the stairs.

The victim is old Mrs Selsby, timid occupant of the hotel’s most coveted sea-front room. Everyone says her death was a tragic accident, but Melita’s not so sure.

Wealthy Mrs S. just happens to have left her fortune to her fellow Devereux residents. And then there’s the matter of her jewellery. A priceless collection that seems to be disappearing piece by piece . . .

Melita may be pushing seventy, but she still has a trick or two left up her sleeve.

Can she catch the killer before anyone else dies?

Meet your next favourite sleuth in this wonderfully witty whodunit.

Are you aware of the excellent radio drama adaptions by the BBC starring Bill Nighy?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00...pisodes/player

Only "A Doubtful Death" is currently available, in four half-hour episodes, but the others will get repeated at some point and become available again.

No, I wasn’t aware and thank you. And for once, I’ve clicked on a BBC link and it’s not geo-blocked! This is going to break up the interminable Trollope novel I’m listening to. Fifteen hours in, fifteen hours to go.

Brett's series are all good, although I haven't tried the couple of new Ellen Curtis ones. But I still stand by Blotto & Twinks for their Wodehousian (how DOES one make an adjective out of Wodehouse?) touch. And by Mrs Pargeter for both the basic premise and the execution on the basic premise - I love when Melita's disapproving manner is enough to keep her late husband's associates from saying what her late husband actually did . And I like her own personality too...

But maybe I'll re-read a few Charles Paris ones, which I haven't read since I was in graduate school, and which may thus have been tainted by that unhappy experience !

Among the Mad is the sixth in Jacqueline Winspear's much-nominated/awarded Maisie Dobbs series. It has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002GUK7N2
Kindle US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B002GUK7N2
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/among-the-mad

Spoiler:
Quote:
In the thrilling new novel by the New York Times bestselling author of An Incomplete Revenge, Maisie Dobbs must catch a madman before he commits murder on an unimaginable scale

It's Christmas Eve 1931. On the way to see a client, Maisie Dobbs witnesses a man commit suicide on a busy London street. The following day, the prime minister's office receives a letter threatening a massive loss of life if certain demands are not met—and the writer mentions Maisie by name. After being questioned and cleared by Detective Chief Superintendent Robert MacFarlane of Scotland Yard's elite Special Branch, she is drawn into MacFarlane's personal fiefdom as a special adviser on the case. Meanwhile, Billy Beale, Maisie's trusted assistant, is once again facing tragedy as his wife, who has never recovered from the death of their young daughter, slips further into melancholia's abyss. Soon Maisie becomes involved in a race against time to find a man who proves he has the knowledge and will to inflict death and destruction on thousands of innocent people. And before this harrowing case is over, Maisie must navigate a darkness not encountered since she was a nurse in wards filled with shell-shocked men.

In Among the Mad, Jacqueline Winspear combines a heart-stopping story with a rich evocation of a fascinating period to create her most compelling and satisfying novel yet.

The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side is either the eighth (blurb) or eleventh (SYKM) in Agatha Christie's Miss Marple series - the difference seems to be whether you count three collections of short stories...

In any case, it's on sale for $1.99 in the US right now.

The quaint village of St Mary Mead has been glamourized by the presence of screen queen Marina Gregg, who has taken up residence in preparation for her comeback. But when a local fan is poisoned, Marina finds herself starring in a real-life mystery—supported with scene-stealing aplomb by Jane Marple, who suspects that the lethal cocktail was intended for someone else. But who? If it was meant for Marina, then why? And before the final fade-out, who else from St Mary Mead's cast of seemingly innocent characters is going to be eliminated?

Heresy is the first in the short (six books and a collection of three novellas) but excellent IMO Giordano Bruno series by SJ Parris. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0036S4BN0
Kindle US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B0036S4BN0
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/heresy-5

Spoiler:
Quote:
Masterfully blending true events with fiction, this blockbuster historical thriller delivers a page-turning murder mystery set on the sixteenth-century Oxford University campus. Giordano Bruno was a monk, poet, scientist, and magician on the run from the Roman Inquisition on charges of heresy for his belief that the Earth orbits the sun and that the universe is infinite. This alone could have got him burned at the stake, but he was also a student of occult philosophies and magic. In S. J. Parris's gripping novel, Bruno's pursuit of this rare knowledge brings him to London, where he is unexpectedly recruited by Queen Elizabeth I and is sent undercover to Oxford University on the pretext of a royal visitation. Officially Bruno is to take part in a debate on the Copernican theory of the universe; unofficially, he is to find out whatever he can about a Catholic plot to overthrow the queen. His mission is dramatically thrown off course by a series of grisly murders and a spirited and beautiful young woman. As Bruno begins to discover a pattern in these killings, he realizes that no one at Oxford is who he seems to be. Bruno must attempt to outwit a killer who appears obsessed with the boundary between truth and heresy. Like The Dante Club and The Alienist, this clever, sophisticated, exceptionally enjoyable novel is written with the unstoppable narrative propulsion and stylistic flair of the very best historical thrillers.
