Kindle for PC will update itself even if you select the option to not update. See the section "Preventing undesired updates" in the first post of this thread for instructions on how to prevent that.

Currently the oldest working version of Kindle for PC is 1.17. As jhowell said, see the first post for preventing updates. On 1.17, there's no need to worry about preventing KFX downloads with method 2. Once you're back to 1.17, the next step would be redownloading your books.

It's normal for the books in the Kindle for PC folder to be AZW. What happens when you import those AZW files into Calibre?

I suggest starting Kindle for PC and checking Help -> About Kindle to verify that you are actually running version 1.17.
renderer-test is not part of Kindle for PC version 1.17. It is probably left over from when the program updated itself to a later version. Once you have verified that you actually have version 1.17 then you can leave it or just delete it. Kindle for PC version 1.17 will download books in the My Kindle Content folder. If you see books in subfolders then those were downloaded by a later version of Kindle for PC. |

I've been using Kindle version 1.17 as recommended on this forum for a while now.
Unfortunately, I have had to swap computers and installed 1.17 onto the new one. When I tried to sign in using my Amazon ID and password Amazon locked my account. I could not reset the password to unlock and had to telephone Amazon support. They informed me that their system will no longer recognise sign-ins from old versions of Kindle software and you have to download the latest version from their website. It only appears to lock you out when you do a fresh sign in as the old software is still running and logged in on my old computer. Unfortunately this is virtually unusable due to problems with the system. Does anyone have any suggestion as to how I can download using latest amazon version and still be able to access the file to convert it to mobi format using my ePubToolbox software that I purchased? |

The newest version of Kindle for PC that can be used for your purpose is 1.34.1. See method 2A in the first post in this thread. Hopefully that version can still be registered. The first post also has instructions on finding and verifying old versions of the Kindle software. Last edited by jhowell; 05-07-2022 at 09:39 AM. Reason: clarify |

Just did a fresh install of Kindle for PC 1.17 and was able to login without any issue. A few months ago I had to reinstall Kindle for PC 1.17 on another pc and was unable to login, the fix was to delete the registry key folder HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Amazon.
