So far I've managed to avoid making much use of any of the cloud VPN solutions. One I did need to use showed me as connecting to the Internet from one of their locations (they listed 5, I managed to hit 3). Looking at the packet use, any packet that was not going to an address destined for the corporate tunnel was split off at their location so it appeared to be originating there.

Me either. I've tried a couple of times, from curiosity. Pure hell. Many local sites display ribbon ads which run at the bottom of the screen and decrease the screen real estate. Just awful.

Company HQ with outbound public Internet access and security based at Omaha. Various datacenters and offices, connected on a WAN, around the world. Remote employees can connect to VPN endpoints at several of those datacenters. All of us then work on the same company network, which appears to the Internet as being in Omaha. Honestly, it's been so long since I was last in my actual office, which is also in NJ, I can't remember if my external Internet showed as NJ or Omaha, but neither one would strike me as odd or as an attempt at obfuscation. Just a factor of some network architect's optimizations, I'd guess. Last edited by ApK; 05-02-2022 at 04:34 PM.

No doubt. For instance: my tolerance for hyperbole is lower than some. |

Try uBlock Origin. You'll like it. And then you'll see what I mean by "self-torture" when going without it. And it's not hyperbole — the first thing I install on a new computer is uBlock Origin. I haven't watched broadcast television for over 15 years and would not watch TV if I had to sit through the ads. It's just not worth it.

In my rural location the Internet service was once very very slow (64k ISDN, which was still better than dial-up), and then for a few years only very slow (weak signal 3G) and is now only intermittently very slow (weak signal 4G). This has affected my tolerance of Internet ads, targeted or otherwise. I simply don't have the reliable bandwidth to spend on crap. Mostly I block it at the network firewall, but I also use various forms of filtering in the browser - these days using the feature provided as part of Vivaldi (which I find quite convenient ... just sayin').

Same with broadcast television commercials. I'm quite capable of easily tuning them out if necessary. I typically only ever notice there's a commercial running when someone else in the room is screaming bloody murder about them. *shrug* Last edited by DiapDealer; 05-03-2022 at 06:49 AM.

I can't. I didn't. I decided his comment was hyperbole to me. Feel free to see it however you want. Sorry if my preference to reserve the use of the word "torture" for actual atrocities seems condescending and arrogant to you. Last edited by DiapDealer; 05-03-2022 at 12:32 PM.
