I haven't noticed any difference in speed in going between chapters. But, with the work done on font handling, it wouldn't surprise me if it was slower to do this. It would depend on the fonts used, whether a supplemental font was select, size of the new chapter and exactly what is in the new chapter.

At first i thought the culprit might be the new book i am reading that coincided with the update but i loaded my finished books and the delay between chapters are present in the old books i read which i did not experience the lag before.

Just a minor inconvenience but i thought i shared it here for science

I've noticed the delay between chapters, but like you I started a new book with the new firmware. I was too lazy to go all Bill Nye the Science Guy on it

I'm relieved to read this. Why? My husband accidentally sat on my Sage. The case slightly separated but snapped back together. Then I started having a lot of trouble with the buttons. We thought something may have been damaged. Now seems more likely due to the software update. (He felt so bad that last night he ordered a Libra 2 to replace the Sage.)

Anyway.. confirming I have button issues with my Sage on 4.32.19501

I notice it too, more on the Libra 2, but on the Sage too. Still, I cannot say if the delay was there before and I just never noticed, or is a new bug feature.

I did a bit more testing and connecting from within kepub does seem to cause issues (scan&fix prompts, and database changes made with Kobo Utilities during one of those connects often don't seem to take -- but I'd expect some kind of error if it was mounted read-only).

Thankfully that's well easily avoidable and I haven't been able to repeat the database corruption from earlier.

From what I can see, the frequency of Windows prompting to scan the device is back to the pre-4.31 status. It happens, but, nowhere near every time. I think I had one yesterday and a couple over the weekend when I did a lot of connections.

As to Kobo Utilities updating the database, I honestly haven't used any of those functions for a while. All of my updates are done by the driver. If something is failing in the plugin, report it in the thread with the details so I can look at it. It might be a change I hadn't noticed.

And the readonly mounting that has been discussed is after the device is ejected. If that is happening, it is possible that the database has been updated, but, not reread by nickel. Restarting the device should remount the partition correctly and reread the database. That might show the changes.

I just tested again. Connected with kepub open, updated fanfic on device (update ToC, update percent read, and add to to-be-read collection). Disconnected. At first it looked like the changes hadn't taken (the book was still at 100% read and not in the coll), but then when I restarted it fixed it. That's good to know.

When reading a book it's possible to activate the Brightness & the Font tool at the same time - making 2 black circles & simultaneous overlapping pop-up windows.

Was this an issue before the update?

No, I don't believe it was happening before. And I think I only noticed it with 4.32.x because I tapped through all the icons trying to decide if I liked the round highlight over the previous square highlight.

And, it isn't just the light icon. The rotation icon also does not dismiss the other popups when it is opened. That only shows on the devices that support landscape mode or have had the configuration option added to show it.

Adding this to my config file solved the slow chapter page transitions:

[Reading]
webkitTextRendering=optimizespeed

I am not sure whether this is connected to the lag in between chater transitions but the lag was gone in my tests now. I will observe more as i read more.

Likely to be related, optimize legibility does add noticeable lag for me when opening a large ebook (the complete wheel of time series) less for smaller ebook collections (A Song of Ice and Fire, Malazan Book of the Fallen, and Lord of the Rings). Opening a traditional single volume book has a very slight lag. Note for all cases lag here means a blank screen is displayed which is replaced by the text or image of whatever page I’m on. Interestingly this doesn’t occur when waking from sleep, only opening the book. And in no case is it significant enough time that I became concerned the reader has crashed it’s maybe 2 seconds of black screen being generous and on WoT which is the longest lag I’ve seen.

I’ve not noticed lag between chapters though with WoT they aren’t that frequent.

I can confirm i have the legibility in my config when i experienced the lags.

Also i am experiencing some hangs on my libra 2 (do not know uf this is related to said configs). Screen is lit, but pages won't turn and even the page turn buttons do not respond. Pressing the power button also does not respond and not putting the device to sleep. Long pressing the power button resets the device but i noticed it does not bookmark the last page read properly. Often after the reset after a hang, when i open the book i was reading, it would open to a art a few pages back from where i last read.

Since the upgrade I can get onto eduroam (University network). Has anyone else noticed this change? Maybe it's just the network that has changed.

Is this on the replacement Kobo sent you or your original Libra 2?
