Someone once mentioned that one could train the algorithm to turn off the lighting by manually lowering the brightness down to zero in bright sunny conditions often enough.

I had this feature on my Voyage but have lost any ability to compare as I no longer have one. I would imagine it is about the same. I rarely feel need to adjust the brightness, but then my reading environment basically has two settings: indoors with ambient light from windows or lamps, or in the dark, at which point I turn on Dark mode. So to extent indoor brightness varies for me, it adjusts well to that.

Comparing with PW4 (with no auto-brightness), it seemed to have a much narrower range of ‘pleasantness’ to work with, even with manual adjustments. I wasn’t reading on it much.

What do you mean by ‘bright ambient environment’? In full sunlight? If you can’t notice it, what can possibly be alarming about it?

Not really a concern for me, as I have never experienced this issue. E.g. I never read in full sunlight. I’m not overly worried about having to charge up more often, and the PW5 seems to go longer between charges than any Kindle I’ve ever had.

Another thing: data transfer via USB-C seems much faster. Noticed this when transferring the latest update .bin file.

I have one next to the PW3/7thGen and the Voyage and I find the screen more pleasant than I expected..

But really really hate the button on the bottom. I can't believe they haven't moved that by now.

Yes, especially since the Oasis has its power button on top, which is the right place for reading in bed (on Paperwhites with button on the bottom, I've quite often accidentally switched off the device with my pinky finger curved under it as additional support when reading in bed, holding the Kindle with my right hand, slightly above my head)

True, but because it has a grip on its side, no need for any finger to be used as support under it, so no problem even when holding in my left hand (when power button is on the bottom)

You cannot hold the grip-less Paperwhite the same way, that is why power button should be on the top.

One other small thing I like: the ‘page turn animation’ (vertical wipe as you turn pages).

The new page-flip turn animation is a game change for me, it feels much more fluid ... USB-C can be useful if you have other USB C devices close

And using night mode plus warm lights allows you to read for much longer at night.

Perhaps the paste would be that having everything activated consumes the battery much faster (WiFi + warm light)
Very happy with the purchase, waiting for the new Oasis to see what news brings ...

Yes, also waiting on new Oasis, if there is one. My husband does most of his reading before bed, I think he'd enjoy the warmer front light that his Oasis 2 does NOT have. So it would make a nice present for him, as he's hard to shop for.

Me, I wouldn't mind less blinding blue light being shown about the bedroom either, as he tends to keep the brightness high!

How much time does it actually take to charge the PW5 from low battery screen to 100%? Using 9W wired charger.
Amazon states 2 - 2.5 hours.

But when I've tried changing my PW5 that is bricked (it bootloops every 10 seconds) after ~70 minutes the light has already turned green. I've charged it with 5V 2A (= 10W) charger.
This Paperwhite model uses 1.5A max unlike my older Paperwhites that used 0.5A...
