Hey! Its me!

Linuxghost is here with his (old) Sony PRS-T1 (android) and his PocketBook Touch Lux 3 (626). And they are rooted! (Of course, because not rooted your device is not really yours...)

Hello and welcome to MobileRead!

My Kobos aren't rooted, because... there's no need to root a Kobo.

Hey Sirtel. Thanks for your reply. I'm new here, but a computer-dinosaur. (as from 2nd generation; yes i'm that old...).
Why is there no need to root a Kobo??
Is it pre-rooted than?

Kobo OS is open. Meaning you can add other reading apps, change things in the configuration file and write modifications for your device right out of the box. There are already a ton of patches written for Kobo readers, with installing instructions for ordinary users. Also KOReader and Plato are popular alternative reading apps.

Kobos integrate really well with Calibre, you can manage your metadata and collections automatically with it.

Moreover, it's easy to downgrade your Kobo to an earlier firmware version, if you happen to dislike an update.

It all may seem like Kobos are dream devices for tinkerers, and they are, but of course they have their downsides too. Kobos tend to be buggier than Kindles, for example. Things have improved much in recent years, but still the experience is not as perfectly streamlined as the Kindle experience. Nevertheless I like my latest Kobo readers more than my Oasis.
