That looks like the touchscreen/light layer and it's not supposed to be pulled off at all... if you do this with a Nintendo Switch you can buy a new digitizer from aliexpress, it doesn't even cost much money (under $10) but I doubt there is such a replacement part available for Kobo...
I guess you could still use the reader without it, but then you'll lack touch controls and everything. You could try search Ebay and places to find an Aura One with broken display and then just put your board/display into it, but I don't know if that can be done at all (not possible if the touch/light layer was originally laminated to the eink layer, as your case looks like such glued layers were forcibly pulled apart). I would agree with you, but it can't be scraped off. Gunk can be scraped off surfaces.
