I am on MobileRead and I came very close to initiating an exchange thinking it was bad hardware.

That's because they are either paranoid or afraid of getting in trouble for having pirated eBooks on their Kobo.

Wouldn't Kobo's view of the scope of any database corruption problem be skewed?

Typical call to Kobo (about a problem that causes database corruption):

User: I'm having problems with my Kobo
Kobo: Did you try cycling power
User: No, How do I do that?
... go back and forth about cycling power
User: No that didn't do anything
Kobo: try logging out and back in
User: that did it

or

Kobo: try a factory reset
User: that did it
Kobo: Glad to hear it, is there anything else I can help you with today
...

Support solved the problem, and the bug never gets past support.

Isn't signing out and signing in actually one of troubleshooting steps? It may have never gone to support in the first place.

You are right, btw. I was able to reproduce this on 4.30. I thought the device I was testing was on 4.31 and was flustered for a bit when suddenly it wasn't happening. But I found a combination that would do it and was able to reproduce 3 times, on 2 different computers.

1. Start from a fresh reboot to minimize other variables.

2. Connect Kobo to PC

3. Send a *new* kepub book to the kobo from Calibre.

4. Umount/Eject and disconnect as normal.

5. Open the new book on the Kobo, flip a few pages.

6. Connect Kobo to PC again..... The Kobo is presented with a filesytem flagged as dirty/damaged.

Yes which is why I thought he might like an official feature which doesn’t run even the small risks that bypassing registration does create. I forgot who I was talking with of course this solution doesn’t work for him because it’s not what he does.

Speaking off signing off and on, the log in screen on the Kobo is just terrible. Instead of using a dedicated UI they use a web page. The font is tiny and the text is grey? I'm just typing blind and hoping for the best. Also after I sign into Kobo they make me sign into Facebook for some reason. They don't let me skip it either. This is on the Walmart edition, maybe it's different with others

For me, I just sign into my Rakuten/Kobo account. No second sign-in needed.

I've not seen that (good thing too, I closed my Facebook account years ago) and I bought my Clara from Walmart.

I've been following this thread, as it does concern me. I've had 4.31 on my Sage since 4.31 came out and frequently sideload books using Calibre and the Kobo Touch Extended driver. I've disabled the existing Kobo driver in Calibre. I also have wifi turned off to conserve battery. Knock on wood, but I have yet to experience any of the problems described in this thread. Could the driver used to sideload possibly be at the root of the problem?
