I could give one away. But I would have to install 4.30 and the patch to prevent WiFi firmware updates. Then it would be OK to go.

I'd say if you side load at all (doesn't have to be frequently).

What if they promised to only sideload with their Kobo in a case, using a good brand USB C to micro USB converter and a good brand micro USB /USB A cable?

Honestly the hyperbole around the bugs in this firmware is hilarious. There are so many easy steps to prevent them and a very easy step to reverse any damage done. And the damaging bug doesn’t seem to reliably trigger on any Kobo.

Can we please stop acting like you run the risk of your Kobo irrevocably bricking if you sideload using 4.31.

Hyperbole? Like “irrevocably bricking”?

Stop telling us how to feel. Your scorn is not helpful.

No, but it can freeze upon boot when wifi is disabled, and if you don't have a computer available to connect and reset it you're kind of stuck.

Neither is pretending this is affecting a massive amount of people and or is likely to affect the average Kobo user.

As to your request I’d ask the same of you.

I’ve heard of this one for the Libra 2, yet doing everything to trigger it results in nothing going on for my Libra 2.

I never said either of those things. Does a firmware problem have to affect a massive amount of people for it to be worth fixing?

When did I say it wasn’t worth fixing? I’m simply tired of posts like Jons which make the issues of this firmware out to be bigger than they are.

And let’s be clear the bugs are affecting a subset of these forums which are already a fairly small subset of Kobo users overall. Should the problem be fixed? Yes. Is it so dire that the majority of users are likely to ever be aware of it? No.

And for those who are more likely to trigger the bug the better part of them are likely already here or are likely to find the forums should they run into the issue. After which as I’ve said it’s easy to set yourself up to avoid and recover from it.

Well said. Yes, it's a bug. No, it is not the end of the world if it takes longer than some seem to think it should to fix the issue.

As for Jon? His posts over the years do show his habit of fixating on a issue as if it was a reality ending issue.

Why would you want to use 4.31 when 4.30 does work better and has less chance of causing problems? Plus with the patch to prevent WiFi firmware updates, you don't have to worry about syncing or using Pocket.

And for those who do want to keep WiFi off, the risk of it freezing on a reboot with no computer nearby is not a good thing.

Is there any reason to run 4.31 instead of 4.30?

I’ve kept WiFi off on my Sage, Forma, and Libra 2 with zero issues rebooting and loading ebooks and I’ve yet to see this issue being reported anywhere near as much as the database issues which aren’t even that widespread.

4.31 did add a feature I’d think you’d at least be happy to have as an option, that being sideload mode since any time anyone wants to get around registration you like to harp on about Kobo potentially making a change which would lose information that is largely irrelevant to those not looking to purchase from Kobo.

It also improves battery life on the Sage.

And all the other improvements mentioned in the start of this thread.

Irrevocably bricking? No. But recurrent database corruptions are not exactly trivial.

I'm reasonably technical for a user, and accustomed to doing my own troubleshooting, but I was close to convinced I'd received a bad device out of the box until the other reports started surfacing here.

To be honest, I could care less about side load mode. It's a silly feature (IMHO). Plus, it's not worth it at present given that 4.31 has problems with side loading.

Just imagine what it's like for Kobo users who do not know about 4.31 like we do and are not online and are not going to find us and find out what's going on. They may just think that their Kobo is not working properly.
