The settings.reader.lua look like it should be. I have the same device as you. Here it works, so we will get it soon.
After my last post, I opened 6 different books for the first time each. All opened fine with no crashes. This was after enabling the standby, but without extracting the code snippet.

If you disable standby, do you still get the crashes?

@zwim: My guiess is the unblanace comes from the fact that `_reschedule_standby` will *NOT* call `preventStandby` if the timeoout is < 1; while `onCloseWidget` will *always* call `allowStandby` (even on devices without the canStandby cap, which is another unrelated issue ^^).

This is what the overengineering in https://github.com/koreader/koreader...cff9bbd417937a tries to account for .

I'm open to simpler solutions , since you're more familiar with the flow of things there .

The key was making sure the metadata generator runs, which leads me to another question for @Uncle Robin: were you testing this on directories with new books, or do you just happen, to, by chance, be in a directory where the metadata parser is looping on a broken file?

The crashes all happened on previously unopened books that were each in different directories (different authors). Being the slothful cur I am, after zwim's suggestion to turn on standby stopped the crashes I haven't investigated further, sorry.

The "previously unopened" bit was exactly what I was asking for, no worries .
