After my last post, I opened 6 different books for the first time each. All opened fine with no crashes. This was after enabling the standby, but without extracting the code snippet.

@zwim: My guiess is the unblanace comes from the fact that `_reschedule_standby` will *NOT* call `preventStandby` if the timeoout is < 1; while `onCloseWidget` will *always* call `allowStandby` (even on devices without the canStandby cap, which is another unrelated issue ^^).
This is what the overengineering in https://github.com/koreader/koreader...cff9bbd417937a tries to account for ![]() I'm open to simpler solutions , since you're more familiar with the flow of things there ![]() |

The key was making sure the metadata generator runs, which leads me to another question for @Uncle Robin: were you testing this on directories with new books, or do you just happen, to, by chance, be in a directory where the metadata parser is looping on a broken file?
