That said, I agree with you about DRM. Any book I buy gets the DRM immediately removed. There's no DRMed ebook in my Calibre library. |

That wouldn't work for me either. Most of the books I intend to read over the remainder of my life haven't even been published yet.

If someone mentions something and it looks good, I buy it if the price is right. I have bought books after 2015 of course, but not in the thousands. I have a weird buying pattern according to others. Even if a series looks good, I won't buy it before it is finished. (If the series is going to consist of multiple trilogies, for example, I'll buy it per finished trilogy.) There are quite a few series on my list that are still going and as soon as the author declares them finished I'll buy the entire series in one go. Actually, if I discover a new author I like after reading 1-2 books, I'll just buy his or her entire (finished) work. Same thing in clothing stores. When I shop for shirts, I find the the type I like and then I buy it in every available color that I like. I'm also the guy that causes you to not be able to buy dish washing detergent or hand soap at your favorite online store for at least a week, because I was just there five minutes earlier and I bought the last 87 flasks because they were on sale for 50%. I hate shopping. I hate browsing. Both online and IRL. It costs too much time and effort, especially with my poor vision. I have lists of what I want or need, and as soon as one of those items is needed I shop around and buy so much of it that I'm done for at least a year. Obviously I don't buy 20 computers in one go; but WHEN I buy a computer, it is so massively overpowered that I could keep it for at least 7-8 years if I so wanted. Often my computer is still in the midrange of available NEW devices with regard to computing power, memory and storage, 5-6 years after I bought it. When it starts slipping into lower quarter compared to newer computers I'll start to look for something new. I'm sure you get the drift. At some point I'll probably go on a massive e-book shopping spree again. Last edited by Katsunami; 03-30-2022 at 02:57 PM. |

Yeah, I get it, although my own habits are different in many things. While I don't particularly enjoy shopping and browsing either, I dislike buying things in bulk even more as they would clutter up my small apartment terribly (except for ebooks, which I also bought in huge batches when I replaced my paper library. I still buy new ebooks regularly, though).
As to computers, I've actually gone the same route as you for several years now. I used to buy low- and midrange stuff and got dissatisfied with it in a couple of years. Now I buy a top tier device and expect it to last for 5 or more years at the very least. |

And here we are, talking about buying habits, with me hoping that someone might benefit from that fix for K4PC 1.17 under Wine in Linux

You do not want KePub from Kobo. You want ePub. ePub is the archival format. Plus, you can use the KoboTouchExteneded driver to conver ePub to KePub if that's what you want. So Obok doesn't need to work.

Actually, the new Adobe DRM has been cracked. See Add support for "hardened" Adobe DRM & crypto code clean-up for more information.
I just tested a new purchase from Kobo. I opened the Kobo Desktop app, downloaded the book, opened calibre and Obok showed the book was there with DRM, imported to calibre and no problems. Last edited by DNSB; 03-30-2022 at 06:45 PM. |

If you are going to choose a version for archiving, you should really download both and look at which is the better or which is the later (in case the author/publisher fixed something) because the versions are not necessarily the same. Of course, if you don't like Adobe for some reason, don't download the epubs with Adobe DRM because that sends a little bit of money to Adobe which, I'm pretty sure, they will not receive if you only use the kepub version. |

I read that there is a new Calibre plugin that eliminates the need for Adobe Digital Editions, but didn't know if that is what you're using.. |

It seems the new DRM isn't used a lot, even though it has existed for... what... 8+ years? |

I believe that they will continue to remove the download option in more cases. It wouldn’t surprise me to see it go away for ebook rentals, loans, and Kindle Unlimited. Also over time additional publishers may opt for the more secure DRM that goes along with preventing downloads. Last edited by jhowell; 03-30-2022 at 10:55 PM. |

That's the key, if I want another format I will just convert it again (ebooks are not music or video where you can lose quality during conversion, and I'll just do a loseless conversion for comics). The best thing is if multiple options works since some of them will stop working. Quote:
Thank you for letting me know. About the kobo ebook did you open the converted ebook? Because I did not get any error during conversion but the result was not readable in my case. Last edited by Lief; 03-31-2022 at 01:50 AM. |

So if adobe drm is really fully cracked even for newer version, right now the real problem is how to deal with KFX since that still enforced by amazon. Right now we got both old kindles-usb trasfer-old kindle pc app (really old to remove KFX drm with KFX Input, until 1.34 for the registry script that disable KFX support so that it will download the old version that can be drm-free or with a drm easy to remove, with KFX even drm-free ebooks will get a drm from amazon for some reason). If that's continue to be true in the future I think that I will start to buy ebook on kobo instead of amazon when possible. I usually prefer to buy on amazon since they usually both got a drm and I mostly use my kindle to read so I just remove the drm, store the backup as soon as I buy it and read the drm version downloaded from the cloud. But that can change. I have programming knowledge but unfortunately I know absolutely nothing about the drm removal side so I hope that the community will be able to intervene (I know that it is not at all simple or obvious that it will be possible at all). |
