Please suggest something someone.

Are you running the batch file as Administrator?

If you are using Kobo version 4.30.188838 I can send you a PM containing the files in the Out directory. The only patch I have activated is the one enabling Advanced font setting. And of course for Libra 2.
Then all you will have to do is do step 7 of the instructions.

Quote:
Install the patches by copying KoboRoot.tgz into the .kobo folder of your device
If the patching succeeded, a file named KoboRoot.tgz will be created in the out folder. Copy it to the .kobo folder of your device. Safely remove your device once you are finished. On Linux, you may have to press Ctrl+H to show the .kobo folder.

@JSWolf and Svenlind: Thank you so much for this offer. Last night I spent a couple of hours going through the patch files and choosing those I wanted (for example, the ability to make the lines closer together).

I have tried running the batch file as Administrator, to the same effect.
However, I do have something called KoboRoot tgz in the .src file. Has this somehow been created by what appeared to be failed efforts to open the .bat? Should I try to put this into the .kobo folder of the device?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but I'm not very techy and this is the first time I've tried this.

To the best of my knowledge the output file KoboRoot tgz will only be produced if kobopatch.bat has run successfully.

However, to remove all doubt, I suggest you open kobopatch.bat in your text editor and add a new line at the end of the file, i.e. add
Code:
PAUSE
Then run kobopatch.bat again. The command window will now not close until you press a key to continue and you will be able to see all the many kobopatch messages created during the run. The screen will either show
Code:
Successfully saved patched KoboRoot.tgz to KoboRoot.tgz. Remember to make sure your kobo is running the target firmware version before patching.
or it will show an error message if there was a problem.

jackie_w I did as you suggested, then ran the .bat. Instead of closing it showed a message which said:

then told me to press any key to continue.

If you go to the out subdirectory you'll find a log.txt file. Open it in your text editor and post here the last few lines. I think I know what the problem will be but I'd rather be sure.

Thanks for helping me to learn how to patch a Kobo.
On my Mac, I use the Terminal.

On Windows, I guess it's the command prompt in admin mode.

In the Out subdirectory I found a blank txt file called "run Kobopatch to generate these files". I wasn't sure if by 'here' you meant in this thread or in the txt file, so I pasted "the system cannot find the path specified" (without quotes) into the empty txt file.

out\run_kobopatch_to_generate_these_files.txt is just a help file. If there is no file named out\log.txt it looks as if kobopatch.bat has never properly got going.

Did you download a copy of the 4.30 firmware .zip file (kobo-update-4.30.18838.zip) and copy it to the \src subdirectory before you tried to run kobopatch.bat?

If the answer to the above is 'No' then please do so and rerun kobopatch.bat by double-clicking on it.

Otherwise, if the answer is 'Yes' then I need to try to reproduce exactly what's happening on your PC. So, please take a copy of the following 6 files and zip them up into a .zip file and attach it to your next reply. The zip should be very small so well within the forum size limits for zip attachments.
Code:
kobopatch.yaml
kobopatch.bat
src\libadobe.so.yaml
src\libnickel.so.1.0.0.yaml
src\librmsdk.so.1.0.0.yaml
src\nickel.yaml

If the answer to the above is 'No' then please do so and rerun kobopatch.bat by double-clicking on it.
I tried to run the .bat file, then read the instructions again and thought I might need a copy of the firmware. Initially, I thought I only needed this if I was also installing the firmware then realised that the instructions in the .yaml files might need to integrate with the firmware in the patch. I hope that makes sense.

So I found and downloaded the correct firmware and unzipped it into the src file. I'm not sure if this was the correct place to put it. All the contents from the unzip are now loose in the src file.

In the src file I can see:
KoboRoot (a folder containing all manner of strange things)
kobo-update-4.30.18838 (a folder containing the upgrade folder and manifest.md5sum)
download_firmware_here.txt
kobopatch.bat
KoboRoot.tgz
libadobe.so.yaml
libnickel.so.1.0.0.yaml
librmsdk.so.1.0.0.yaml
nickel.yaml

Is this what I ought to be seeing?

I've put yes and no in the yaml files depending upon whether or not I want that function. That seemed the easy bit, especially where you put links to mobileread pages and images in order to make it clear what the patches did.

As you can probably tell from my dedication, I'm determined to get this done. I'm very visual and fonts are important.

Thanks for the help.

When that happens to me, there's something wrong in the .yaml patch files. You likely mistyped something somewhere. Only change the 'no' to 'yes' don't hit enter or add or remove any spaces or anything else.

When you run the .bat file, it is hitting something wrong and closing. In the patches, go to the 'out' folder. In that folder there's no 'KoboRoot.tgz', check the 'log.txt' file. It will tell you what the error is.

Windows will run .bat files easily enough. But if it runs into an error, it has an annoying habit of closing the window before you can see what the error was. If it works, the window will stay open with some weird message like 'Waiting 60 seconds because of Windows'.

Check the first post in this thread: Instructions for patching firmware 4.30.18838
  1. Download the Kobo firmware release
  2. You can find the download links here here.
  3. Download and extract the patch zip
  4. Download and unzip kobopatch_4.30.18838.zip from here.
  5. Copy the firmware file to the src folder*
  6. Copy the original firmware you just downloaded into the kobopatch src folder.
  7. Install the firmware if needed**
  8. Install the firmware on your kobo BEFORE proceeding with the next steps. You can do this by extracting the contents of the firmware zip into the .kobo folder and ejecting.
  9. Choose your patches from the files in the src folder
  10. Enable patches in the files in the src folder (or use the overrides in kobopatch.yaml to keep your options separate).
  11. Run kobopatch
  12. Double-click kobopatch.bat on Windows, or run ./kobopatch.sh on Linux or macOS. On macOS, you can drag it into the terminal and press enter (you may need to go to System Preferences - Security and Privacy - General to confirm that you actually want to run it).
  13. Install the patches by copying KoboRoot.tgz into the .kobo folder of your device
  14. If the patching succeeded, a file named KoboRoot.tgz will be created in the out folder. Copy it to the .kobo folder of your device. Safely remove your device once you are finished. On Linux, you may have to press Ctrl+H to show the .kobo folder.

* When it says 'Copy the firmware file to the src folder' you put the 'kobo-update-4.30.18838.zip' file into the src folder. Don't unzip it. Just put the single .zip file in there.

** Your Kobo should be running the same firmware you are using for the patches.

If you are using the 4.30.18838 patches, make sure your Kobo is running firmware 4.30.18838 already.

Looks like I'll have to begin again. I'll keep the main yaml files, which have already been edited. Redownload the patch and the firmware (it was hard to find the firmware my Kobo's running 4.30.18838 to download, everywhere I looked was offering the 4.31 firmware).

I'll put the zipped firmware into the src folder.

What determines whether I need to install this firmware onto the reader at this point? It already has it - it came with this firmware already installed.*

*Once I know the answer to this question, I'll proceed as follows, unless someone tells me I shouldn't.

Replace the four yaml files with the ones I've edited.
Run the .bat file. Then put the KoboRoot tgz into the .kobo folder of the Libra.

And hope it works!

If this is the correct proceedure, please let me know and I'll try again - without making such a pig's ear of it!

@geek1011's firmware page always includes a link to "Other Versions" - effectively older versions
