What is SYNC?

  SYNC is a free summer audiobook program for teens 13+
  
  Returning Spring 2022, SYNC gives participants two thematically paired audiobooks each week. Titles are all available worldwide and change every Thursday at midnight Eastern Time during the season.

  • Titles are accessible in Sora, the student reading app from OverDrive.
    
  • Sora is available in your browser at soraapp.com, or as an app from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
    
  • Each SYNC audiobook will be featured in Sora for a window of 7 days.
    
  • Titles are yours indefinitely once you “borrow” them during their 7-day availability window in Sora.

Setting Up Sora

  Can I use Libby or the OverDrive app for the SYNC program instead of the Sora app?
  
  The SYNC program will only work with Sora, the student reading app from OverDrive. You don’t need to be affiliated with a school to use Sora with the SYNC program.
  
  
  First register for SYNC. Then set up Sora.
  
  
  How do I set up Sora?

  1. Download Sora from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, or go to soraapp.com in your browser.
     
  2. In Sora, tap I have a setup code (at the bottom of the screen)
     
  3. Enter this setup code: audiobooksync and tap Get Started!
     
  4. Enter the email address you used to sign up for SYNC
     
  5. Tap Explore (at the bottom of the screen) to see the week’s featured titles [SYNC 2022 starts April 28]

  
  I already use Sora for school. How do I add SYNC titles?
  
  If you already use Sora, you’ll need to add the SYNC program’s library. Here are the steps:

  1. In Sora, open the menu (in the top-right corner)
     
  2. Select Add library
     
  3. Search for audiobooksync and select the library from the results
     
  4. Enter the email address you used to sign up for SYNC

    Mystery, history, humor, sports, romance! Full-cast performances of graphic novels! Nonfiction and fictionalized explorations of current events! Stage dramas, works in translation, classics, and more! We are delighted to share the long list of free audiobooks for teens you and yours will be able to download to keep during the 13th SYNC season. Thank yous are in order to the 17 audiobook publishers who have contributed titles this year. In the coming weeks, we will remind you of the practical details participants need to know about this annual event, including the fact that these are world access titles for individuals to download and keep.

How to Get in Sync with SYNC

Hosted by AudioFile Magazine, and delivered through OverDrive’s Sora app (which can be used on a computer, smartphone, tablet, or any device connecting to the Internet), SYNC provides free digital downloads to individuals (not to institutions). Each title is available to download for only one week. However, once downloaded, you can keep it on your Sora shelf and access it anytime for 99 years. There is no catch: This is not a subscription or a promotion coupled with a purchase.

Sora is the app that OverDrive developed to deliver e-audiobooks and e-books to students in school settings. However, SYNC participants gain entry to the program’s titles through a “school” called “audiobooksync” that anyone, anywhere in the world, can join. To download SYNC titles, you must register for the “school” called audiobooksync in the Sora app; you cannot access these to keep by pointing Sora to the school you attend in real life, and you can access these without being enrolled in any school other than the Sora app’s AudiobookSYNC “school.”

Kurt Vonnegut and the Many Lives of Slaughterhouse-Five

The story of Kurt Vonnegut and Slaughterhouse-Five, an enduring masterpiece on trauma and memory

Kurt Vonnegut was twenty years old when he enlisted in the United States Army. Less than two years later, he was captured by the Germans in the single deadliest US engagement of the war, the Battle of the Bulge. He was taken to a POW camp, then transferred to a work camp near Dresden, and held in a slaughterhouse called Schlachthof Fünf where he survived the horrific firebombing that killed thousands and destroyed the city.

To the millions of fans of Vonnegut’s great novel Slaughterhouse-Five, these details are familiar. They’re told by the book’s author/narrator, and experienced by his enduring character Billy Pilgrim, a war veteran who “has come unstuck in time.” Writing during the tumultuous days of the Vietnam conflict, with the novel, Vonnegut had, after more than two decades of struggle, taken trauma and created a work of art, one that still resonates today.

In The Writer’s Crusade, author Tom Roston examines the connection between Vonnegut’s life and Slaughterhouse-Five through his work, his personal history, and discarded drafts of the novel, as well as original interviews with the writer’s family, friends, scholars, psychologists, and other novelists including Karl Marlantes, Kevin Powers, and Tim O’Brien. The Writer’s Crusade is a literary and biographical journey that probes fundamental questions about trauma, creativity, and the power of storytelling.

  When does my rental period begin?
  
  Your rental timer will begin counting down when you first initiate the download on your device or 10 days after purchase, whichever comes first.

  How long can I listen to a title?
  
  All digital rentals provide a minimum of 30 days to listen to a book from the time you initiate your first download. With some of our longer books, such as Atlas Shrugged (63hrs), we extend the listening period to 60 days. You do have the option of purchasing a 5, 10, or 20 day extension after you have made your rental purchase.

  How many times can I listen to my rental?
  
  You may listen to a rental as many times as you would like until it expires.

  Can I extend my rental time period?
  
  Once you are logged into your Downpour.com account, you can purchase a time extension for any of your previous rentals via THIS link. After clicking “Extend Rental,” you have the option of purchasing a 5-day ($1.95), 10-day ($2.95) or 20-day ($4.95) extension. If your rental has not yet expired, the purchased time will be added onto your rental. (Example: if your rental has one day remaining, and you purchase a five-day extension, you will now have six days total before your rental expires.) If your rental has already expired, the extension will allow you to listen to your book again for the amount of time purchased.

  Can I have the same rental on more than one device?
  
  You may listen to your audiobook rental on as many personal devices as you own. Your rental time will be synced across all devices on which you have installed the Downpour app.

Lord of the Rings sale for Premium Plus US members = all the audiobooks narrated by both Rob Ingles and Andy Sirkis plus Silmarillion are on deep discount today. There are other books related to LOTR also on sale on that sale page. Most are $4.95-$5.95. Buy 2 and get a $5 Amazon (not Audible) credit. Credit will come via email around April 5 and needs to be used by June 5. Fellowship of the Rings is the deal of the day at $4.95 so available to a wider membership.

It always surprises me when Amazon gets things so wrong. With all their data and algorithms, you’d think they’d be better at not irritating customers by making it obvious they’re separating the sheep from the goats. It’s not nice to tease.
