God: An Anatomy by Francesca Stavrakopoulou is £0.99 on Amazon.co.uk
This is on my wishlist, but I'm not in the UK
Quote:
Three thousand years ago, in the Southwest Asian lands we now call Israel and Palestine, a group of people worshipped a complex pantheon of deities, led by a father god called El. El had seventy children, who were gods in their own right. One of them was a minor storm deity, known as Yahweh. Yahweh had a body, a wife, offspring and colleagues. He fought monsters and mortals. He gorged on food and wine, wrote books, and took walks and naps. But he would become something far larger and far more abstract: the God of the great monotheistic religions.

But as Professor Francesca Stavrakopoulou reveals, God’s cultural DNA stretches back centuries before the Bible was written, and persists in the tics and twitches of our own society, whether we are believers or not. The Bible has shaped our ideas about God and religion, but also our cultural preferences about human existence and experience; our concept of life and death; our attitude to sex and gender; our habits of eating and drinking; our understanding of history. Examining God’s body, from his head to his hands, feet and genitals, she shows how the Western idea of God developed. She explores the places and artefacts that shaped our view of this singular God and the ancient religions and societies of the biblical world. And in doing so she analyses not only the origins of our oldest monotheistic religions, but also the origins of Western culture.

A decent selection of books from The University Press of Kentucky have dropped to 99¢ on Kindle US and Kobo. You'll need to check the price history on individual books to know if it's a good deal or not.

I was alerted to the sale by my wishlist price drop for this ebook:
"You've Come a Long Way, Baby: Women, Politics, and Popular Culture" by Lilly J. Goren, $0.99 at Kindle US and Kobo:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0078XFTCG
https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/you...ong-way-baby-3
Quote:
No matter what brand of feminism one may subscribe to, one thing is indisputable: the role of women in society during the past several decades has changed dramatically, and continues to change in a variety of ways. In You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby, Lilly J. Goren and an impressive group of contributors explore the remarkable advancement achieved by American women in a historically patriarchal social and political landscape, while examining where women stand today and contemplating the future challenges they face worldwide. As comprehensive as it is accessible, You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby appeals to anyone interested in confronting the struggles and celebrating the achievements of women in modern society.

In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado is $1.99 on Amazon.com
A memoir about an abusive relationship. Was on my wishlist.
Quote:
In the Dream House is Carmen Maria Machado’s engrossing and wildly innovative account of a relationship gone bad, and a bold dissection of the mechanisms and cultural representations of psychological abuse. Tracing the full arc of a harrowing relationship with a charismatic but volatile woman, Machado struggles to make sense of how what happened to her shaped the person she was becoming.

And it’s that struggle that gives the book its original structure: each chapter is driven by its own narrative trope—the haunted house, erotica, the bildungsroman—through which Machado holds the events up to the light and examines them from different angles. She looks back at her religious adolescence, unpacks the stereotype of lesbian relationships as safe and utopian, and widens the view with essayistic explorations of the history and reality of abuse in queer relationships.

Machado’s dire narrative is leavened with her characteristic wit, playfulness, and openness to inquiry. She casts a critical eye over legal proceedings, fairy tales, Star Trek, and Disney villains, as well as iconic works of film and fiction. The result is a wrenching, riveting book that explodes our ideas about what a memoir can do and be.

The Code Book by Simon Singh is $1.99 on Amazon.com
Quote:
Simon Singh offers the first sweeping history of encryption, tracing its evolution and revealing the dramatic effects codes have had on wars, nations, and individual lives. From Mary, Queen of Scots, trapped by her own code, to the Navajo Code Talkers who helped the Allies win World War II, to the incredible (and incredibly simple) logisitical breakthrough that made Internet commerce secure, The Code Book tells the story of the most powerful intellectual weapon ever known: secrecy.

Throughout the text are clear technical and mathematical explanations, and portraits of the remarkable personalities who wrote and broke the world's most difficult codes. Accessible, compelling, and remarkably far-reaching, this book will forever alter your view of history and what drives it. It will also make you wonder how private that e-mail you just sent really is.

The Betrayal of the Duchess: The Scandal That Unmade the Bourbon Monarchy and Made France Modern by Maurice Samuels is on sale at Kindle for $4.99 which might not seem cheap, but it’s a 75% discount off the regular price of $19.99. And it gets a 50¢ Great on Kindle credit while existing ones will knock down the price a bit more.

It’s an account of the Duchesse de Berry’s attempt to restore the Bourbon monarchy and of antisemitism in 19th century France as well. I found it both fascinating and illuminating and I highly recommend it.

I don't get Great on Kindle credits anymore - or at least, I haven't for a long time, and I don't see one on this. I still see the logo/blurb, but no money - at least on other Great on Kindle books. I haven't bought this one and looked for a credit, but based on getting nada on others in the past several months, I doubt I would. Sigh! More of Amazon's algorithms...

True Crime Book on Pam Hupp Case

This doesn’t look like a bargain, but trust me, it is. The true crime book “ Bone Deep: Untangling the Twisted True Story of the Tragic Betsy Faria Murder Case” is $6.29 today. This one is still in hardback, so that is a nice price drop. I’ve been holding out for it…

This one is very timely — it’s about the Pam Hupp case that was the basis for the NBC miniseries “The Thing about Pam.” This book is co-authored by Russ Farina’s lawyer. (The main author is Charles Bosworth, Jr., a veteran true crime author.)

A Brief History of Earth: Four Billion Years in Eight Chapters, by Andrew H. Knoll, has 4.5 out of 5.0 stars, on more than 400 ratings, and it's only $1.99 today at Kindle US, as part of today's Daily Deal. And it's price-matched at Kobo US. I haven't read it, but it looks really interesting, so I'm going to have to find the time! And it has a great title .

Spoiler:
Quote:
Harvard’s acclaimed geologist “charts Earth’s history in accessible style” (AP)

“A sublime chronicle of our planet." –Booklist, STARRED review

How well do you know the ground beneath your feet?

Odds are, where you’re standing was once cooking under a roiling sea of lava, crushed by a towering sheet of ice, rocked by a nearby meteor strike, or perhaps choked by poison gases, drowned beneath ocean, perched atop a mountain range, or roamed by fearsome monsters. Probably most or even all of the above.

The story of our home planet and the organisms spread across its surface is far more spectacular than any Hollywood blockbuster, filled with enough plot twists to rival a bestselling thriller. But only recently have we begun to piece together the whole mystery into a coherent narrative. Drawing on his decades of field research and up-to-the-minute understanding of the latest science, renowned geologist Andrew H. Knoll delivers a rigorous yet accessible biography of Earth, charting our home planet's epic 4.6 billion-year story. Placing twenty first-century climate change in deep context, A Brief History of Earth is an indispensable look at where we’ve been and where we’re going.

Features original illustrations depicting Earth history and nearly 50 figures (maps, tables, photographs, graphs).

The cult favorite More Home Cooking by Laurie Colwin is currently only $1.99, regularly $13.99 (! - which is nuts). it’s not just about the food, although that part is fun, as the food serves as a springboard for her essays on her life and her surroundings in New York. I’m providing the Kobo link, but it’s available elsewhere as well.
