Kindle for PC just updated itself to version 1.35 on my system. This new release disables the workaround that allowed previous versions to download books in usable (non-KFX) formats.

Another sign that Amazon is fixing some of the holes in their walled garden.

is looking at other ereader brands for my next upgrade...

But seriously, I expected this. My only hope is they don't take out the send-to-kindle function. Or be like Google when they took back the unlimited google photos backup feature.

I was considering saving up for a pw5, but let's see where this takes us.

Unfortunately here in Brazil the only e-reader sold is the Kindle. I'm starting to wonder if it wouldn't be better to import a Kobo...

Doesn't KDP lock authors into being Kindle-only? I remember reading once that it prevents them from publishing the book on another site.

If Amazon do totally disable transfer via usb I won't be able to purchase any more books from them, because I don't have wifi for my kindles to log on to. Good job I like reading classics!

Books published using KDP do not need to be exclusive to Amazon.

KDP books can be enrolled in KDP Select for 90 day periods during which they will be available in Kindle Unlimited but must be exclusive to Kindle during that time. (Only the ebook has to be exclusive. It can be available in print elsewhere.)

So far all of my books can still be downloaded from the Manage Your Content and Devices page. I have a handful of non-fiction books; the rest are fiction.

For the books that can't be downloaded, were they available for download previously, and now aren't? Also, do they have anything in common (textbooks, same publisher, etc.)?

It used to be possible to select that option when buying a book, it no longer is. The download and transfer option now only available in Manage my content and devices. That is a change, and IS a cause for worry, as a likely precursor to its eventual elimination.
