A Monstrous Regiment of Women is the second in Laurie R. King's excellent IMO Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes series. And at least some folks agree with me - per SYKM, Regiment won the 1996 Nero Award. Regiment has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Quote:
Winner of the Nero Wolfe Award

It is 1921 and Mary Russell--Sherlock Holmes's brilliant apprentice, now an Oxford graduate with a degree in theology--is on the verge of acquiring a sizable inheritance. Independent at last, with a passion for divinity and detective work, her most baffling mystery may now involve Holmes and the burgeoning of a deeper affection between herself and the retired detective. Russell's attentions turn to the New Temple of God and its leader, Margery Childe, a charismatic suffragette and a mystic, whose draw on the young theology scholar is irresistible. But when four bluestockings from the Temple turn up dead shortly after changing their wills, could sins of a capital nature be afoot? Holmes and Russell investigate, as their partnership takes a surprising turn in A Monstrous Regiment of Women by Laurie R. King.

The Killing Tide is the fifth in Jean-Luc Bannalec's Brittany series. It has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Spoiler:
Quote:
The Killing Tide by Jean-Luc Bannalec is the fifth novel in the internationally bestselling Commissaire Dupin series.

Deep sea fishers, dolphin researchers, smugglers, and an island shrouded in myth in the middle of the rough Atlantic ocean: Commissaire Dupin had sworn he would never again investigate on the ocean, but his fifth case takes him offshore, off the west coast of Brittany on a beautifully sunny day in June. He lands on the unique Île de Sein, populated by more rabbits than people, where the hairdresser arrives by boat and which was formerly inhabited by powerful witches and even the devil himself. In front of this impressive backdrop—between the islands of Molène, Ouessant, and the bay of Douarnenez—Dupin and his team follow a puzzling case that pushes them to their very limits.

I've now read this, and enjoyed it (and also the next one in the series, Revenge in Rubies) totally as much as I expected. Singapore Sapphire is on sale again right now in the US and UK, this time for $1.99/£1.49 and the links are still good.

ADD: This may be in honor of the newest book in the series, Evil in Emerald, coming out in a few weeks...

Dance with Death is the thirteenth and most recent (2021) in Will Thomas' Barker & Llewelyn series. It has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Quote:
London, 1893: Private enquiry agents Cyrus Barker and Thomas Llewelyn are called in to protect Tsesarevich Nicholas from nefarious forces as he travels to England for a royal wedding—inDance with Death, the next mystery in Will Thomas’s beloved series.

In June of 1893, the future Nicholas II travels to London for a royal wedding, bringing with him his private security force and his ballerina mistress, Mathilde Kchessinska. Rumored to be the target of a professional assassin known only as La Sylphide, and the subject of conspiracies against his life by his own family who covet his future throne, Nicholas is protected by not only private security, but the professional forces of both England and Russia.

All of these measures prove inadequate when Prince George of England is attacked by an armed anarchist who mistakes him for Nicholas. As a result, Barker and Llewelyn are brought in to help track down the assassin and others who might conspire against the life of the tsesarevich . The investigations lead them down several paths, including Llewelyn's old nemesis, the assassin Sofia Ilyanova. With Barker and Llewelyn both surviving separate attempts on their lives, the race is on to find both the culprit and the assassin they hired. Taking them through high society (including a masked ball at Kensington Palace) and low, chasing down motives both personal and political, Barker and Llewelyn must solve the case of their life before the crime of the century is committed.

The effort involved is appreciated, but I made the point to one member privately that it’s difficult to enforce the guidelines if we’re not consistent and I couldn’t blame them if now they felt aggrieved, as this is a case in point. So with that in mind, I’d like to ask everyone, please, in this sticky thread, don’t recommend a self-pubbed book unless it’s been trad-pubbed before or if you’ve read it and can personally recommend it. No exceptions from now on, even for kitties or lots of five-star reviews or the finger of god. If a self-pubbed book seems irresistible, you can always recommend it below the line, or even start a thread for self-pubbed finds/deals. Thanks.

John Lutz's Fred Carver series is a little thiller-ish for my usually non-thriller-ish taste, and it's Open Road, so the titles go on sale a lot, but it's still hard to beat this one, so here it is...

The Fred Carver Mysteries Volume Two contains the fourth- sixth books in the series: Flame, Bloodfire, and Hot. It's $0.99 in the US right now, and discountable at Kobo. That's only $0.33 each if you need/want them all, and is probably still worth it even if you already have one or two...

Spoiler:
Quote:
The second set of crime thrillers starring a tough Florida PI from the New York Times–bestselling author of Single White Female and “one of the masters” (Ridley Pearson).

New York Times– and USA Today–bestselling author John Lutz has been hailed as “a major talent” by John Lescroart, and he “just keeps getting better and better” (Tony Hillerman). “Lutz offers up a heart-pounding roller coaster” (Jeffery Deaver) in his thrillers and “knows how to make you shiver” (Harlan Coben).

“The Carver series is the finest work yet by this prolific author” (St. Louis Post-Dispatch). After a criminal’s bullet shattered not only his knee but also his career as an Orlando cop and his marriage, Fred Carver starts over as a private detective. In this award-winning ten-book series, Lutz’s “dogged Carver is a believably heroic guy, tough, scarred and able to exhibit fear and courage at the same time” (Publishers Weekly).

Flame: When his newest client is killed in a car explosion only minutes after hiring him, Carver learns the man may not have been whom he claimed.

“Stunning . . . a brilliant writer, here at the peak of his abilities.” —The Plain Dealer

Bloodfire: Carver is hired by a distraught husband to find his missing wife—a heroin addict who fled with nearly $10,000. But when the terrified woman begs Carver for protection, the truth about his client’s motives comes out, and now both of them must go on the run.

“Another satisfying thriller . . . Lutz carefully and caustically captures the heat and amorality of the faces and fixtures of the Florida drug scene.” —The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Hot: After an old man tells Carver a tale of his wealthy neighbor in the Florida Keys using a yacht to smuggle cocaine, he turns up dead, the victim of a suspicious hit-and-run, and it’s up to the PI to bring his killers to justice.

“A fast-paced and well-plotted mystery . . . stays hot until the very last page.” —San Francisco Chronicle
