I don't like Dean Koontz' writing either. So I have a blind spot somewhere.

I didn't rate Salvatore either. Tried one book because I like anything with elves and decided, maybe I don't.

I liked his earlier Drizzt books. But I sort of burned out after a while. For one thing, I started noticing his dialogue tags (though that hadn't stopped me before). Also, so many "dead" characters would come back, miraculously alive. For some reason, I accept that more in a comic book (or in Voltaire's Candide ) than in a novel. I remember being so glad that a certain character fell off a cliff -- and then disappointed when he somehow survived (although most other fans adored him).

Some of the other authors seem so much cooler.

I liked his earlier "breakout" books -- Whispers, Phantoms, Watchers... I tried some of his newer stuff and didn't like it as much. Especially when he got preachy in some of them.

I suggest going to his Legend of Drizzt books. I think you'll like them. These are the books R. A. Salvatore is best know for.

It's used both ways. The Omnibus "Dragonriders of Pern" contains the original trilogy. "The Harper Hall Trilogy" refers to those three books (Dragonsinger, Dragonsong and Dragon Drums). The phrase "A Dragonriders of Pern novel" was added to reprints of the paperbacks later but wasn't used originally...except on the first three books.

Amazon lists them as the "Pern series". FantasticFiction lists them as the Dragonriders of Pern series.

Personally, I'll keep calling them the Pern books, and the first three are the Dragonriders of Pern trilogy.

For me that depends on how it's handled in both. If they give a decent explanation for how the dead character miraculously came back to life, one that I can buy, then it's fine. If they don't even try, especially if they don't explain it at all, it's bad writing and annoys the hell out of me.

The worst example I think I've seen of that wasn't a character but the moon in Gregory Benford's Beyond the Fall of Night, sequel to Arthur C. Clarke's Against the Fall of Night. He brought it back, even though the non-existence of it was a major plot point in the original novel, and it was fully terraformed. I'm not sure he actually read the original before writing his "sequel."

You should give up, JSWolf's never admitted to being wrong about any point they stake, no matter how much evidence is presented refuting it. I recommend discussing this with your wall instead, it'll be more satisfying.

It always reminds me of Misery. "He Didn't Get Out Of The Cockadoodie Car!"

Annie Wilkes had a point.

The publishers (US & UK) call the series The DragonRiders of Pern.

Corinth 2642 AD by Bindiya Schaefer is $2.99 on Amazon.com
Quote:
In the year 2642, no one person is ethnically like the other. Globalization, war, and other catalysts have given birth to a diverse and multi-ethnic new world.

Not everyone feels this new society is ideal, though. A select group of seven colonies—a pureblood, white supremacist cult complete with arranged marriages and heavily guarded borders—have only had one mission: protect the bloodline from contamination and produce the next generation of survivors. But some young people, destined for a life without choices, make a run for it, including Cara, the granddaughter of Julius Bull, the colonies' leader.

Desperate to keep her dissidence quiet for fear of potentially inciting a power struggle within the colonies, Bull brings in Jimmy Matoo—a Special Investigator from San Francisco whose brother was found dead near one of the colonies the same night Cara disappeared. For Matoo, the visit to Corinth, Oregon, is eye-opening. He has never seen a white person before and is shocked by their ideas of imperialism, racial purity, and the prospect of arranged marriages in the 27th century. His investigation reveals that dozens of young colony members have gone missing over the years, and some have been found dead on the outskirts of Corinth.

With the clock ticking, San Francisco’s Detective Matoo’s missing persons investigation soon becomes a fight for survival—turns out the residents don’t like a brown fellow in their midst. Can he find Cara, figure out what happened to his brother, and save the leader's family from the Cabal before it’s too late? Maybe. But first, he must find out who in the colony has the means and connections to smuggle the dissidents out without being detected because it could be the difference between life and death.
