Rolled back, and zero problems ever since.
If Kobo wanted to chase this down, they should be able to. If Kobo can't reproduce it themselves, contact some customers and do some builds with more debug information.

And I don't want to hear about adding debugging information may make the problem go away.

Again, meaningless, since none of these ebooks have errors, and they had been on my previous kobo with no problems. You're barking up the wrong tree.

And even if some of them did have errors, transferring them in small batches like that is the best way to find the bad one.

As it will for all others users that are not hobbyists like us, and who wouldn't know how to roll back the firmware version.

No, Kobo needs to fix this before their products' gain a reputation for unreliability. We're approaching two months since the 31 rollout, and not a peep from them.

And as stated before, those people are unlikely to be noticing the problem because they don't use the devices like we do. They probably aren't connecting to a computer at all. And the ones who it does affect, know how to avoid or fix the problem.

But, you should be measuring from when Kobo was first told about the problem. It wasn't reported here for several days, possibly a week, after the release. And it was a few more days before people realised there was something more going on than before. I don't know when it was first reported to Kobo. I discussed it with them on the 5th of February when I realised it was an actual problem (happening more often than previous firmware versions). Which makes it a little more than a month for them to find and fix a hard to pin down problem like this.

And of course, there is the second issue with WiFi on the Libra 2. They are probably trying to see if they can get both fixed for any update.

The numbers are difficult to assess. But I imagine there are some who will get a book from Project Gutenberg (for example) and try to load it by plugging into the computer, without even knowing that MobileRead exists.

Of course there are. I never said there weren't. But, when compared to the number of users who simply get books from Kobo and sync, that number is probably as insignificant as the number of people who visit MobileRead.

But, does manually sideloading causes a problem? I'm not sure if it does or if you need to have something else access the database for database corruption to happen.

Which is also not a universal issue with the Libra 2, mine has been behaving quite properly with wifi off regardless of if I'm in a book, the homepage, my library, etc.

I just assumed that with a rapid re-connect, the import process still had a hold on the db when the filesystem unmounted and exported to USB. Perhaps the cover generation mentioned before -- though I doubt that's the instance for my case as I have Calibre upload the covers with the books.

I do find it amusingly ironic that the firmware that adds 'sideload mode' has a glitch that happens mostly when sideloading.

There is a patch that will prevent that.

Does anyone have specific details on installing that patch? If it'll let me sync to the Kobo store without a forced upgrade I might revert.

In the file libnickel.so.1.0.0.yaml you want to change no to yes for...
Code:
Block WiFi firmware upgrade:
  - Enabled: no
You also need to download the firmware 4.30 ZIP file.

Oh definitely existed before. I had this problem (not saving reading position, etc) once, but I don't remember if I was on 4.28 or 4.30. I do remember that I both sideloaded books AND installed something (nickelmenu?) during a single connection. Maybe even used calibre to delete some books from the Clara. Probably put kobo to sleep after disconnecting (via Windows eject) before later reading. Since rebooting fixed the problem, I didn't really dwell on it and figured I'd wait to see if it happened again before trying to diagnose what steps I took to trigger it. Hasn't happened since (and I have not upgraded to 4.31).

Ok. Downgraded to 4.30 and then applied the patch. Ran a few manual syncs to check and it didn't prompt me to upgrade. I think this'll work.
