hi Davidfor, you were absolutely right with your question "what am'I trying to do ?" my reality is that I don't want to have a reader but to install LK8000 (paragliding software).
After copy of my koboroot.tgz on the right place (on sd card) and reboot, all is coming fine for me. Many thanks for help me to open my brain.

Sorry, I only have the one image. For a device as old as the Mini, it is probably a good idea to use a new card. A lot of the failures people are seeing with these devices are caused by failing cards. You can use a larger card and resize the book partition. 16GB should work. Some people had 32GB cards working, but, not all brands/models of the cards worked.

Hello all. I have a kobo mini that does a spinning beach ball (clock skinny thing) once past hooking up to network and I've tried all normal avenues to reset. Probably an sd card failure. Are people still sending link for image still? I have PM enabled. thx.

No, it is not an image problem. The device sounds like it is working except for the WiFi. That will be because the Kobo servers no longer support the security protocols that the older firmware uses. This was removed in early 2019 (I think) as those security protocols are no longer considered to be secure. Kobo announced it was withdrawing support for various devices and released an update for the Mini to keep it working. This was firmware version 3.19.5761-s. If you have not installed that, or have needed to do a factory reset, you can use the Kobo desktop to setup the device. That will install the latest firmware available for the Mini.

You can also install the firmware manually while connected to the PC. And later firmware versions work, but, is not officially supported.

If you think there is an issue with the SD card, I can send you the link. But, your description suggests it is the WiFi support.

Hi thanks for the detailed analysis. So, I have tried to hook up to my KOBO app. using usb cord to my ma but the mini doesnt show up at all. When I remove the micro SD card and use an adapter, the Card shows up on my mac desktop. The device, using the cord, never shows up on the desktop. maybe a cord, but I think this cord worked the last time the device worked... Can I tell the firmware version by looking at the files on the sd card?

My wife had trouble with it a few years ago because some books would disappear, or only work for a while and then not, and spent countless hours trying to figure it out and talk to tech support but gave up. I'm trying to resurrect it for her (look Im a hero!)

So when I first launched it a few days ago, I was asked to log into my wifi network, and then after that it would just go through the cycle of the smiley face black dots going across, checking for known networks, checking for new updates, and saying up to date, then "loading" and then the spinning clock? a bunch of slashes going around in a circle. I thought maybe the sd card was shot...

With those symptoms, it could be a failing SD card. So, I have sent a PM with the link.

For the connection to the PC, you should try another card, USB slot and another computer if you have access to one.

For seeing the firmware version on the card, you need to look at the third partition. This has a label something like "KoboReader" and is formatted as FAT32. In the directory ".kobo", there is file "version". The values in that are comma separated and the third one is the firmware version number.

Thanks so much! As an update, I spent an hour with kobo tech, trying to reset etc, and they couldn't get past my login problem using the kobo app. The device seems to want to co-operate but on a pc i get the Captcha, and then resorts to login window and on the mac, no Captcha, just resorts to original log-in window. They confirmed the account was fine, and even added a book to my account and that worked.

Now to figure out how to get that disk image onto the sd (or new) card. Are there directions for a mac out there anywhere? I do have access to my son's pc if needed.

@WardenVolcano: You need to enable Private Messaging. This is in the "Edit Options" of the control panel. If this isn't there, it has to be added somehow. You can try posting in https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=319819 to ask it to be enabled, or contact a moderator.
