The Verdant Passage by Troy Denning is $1.99 at Amazon US. The first book in a five book series from the early '90's. I don't usually do series, but I enjoyed this one.

This is a Dungeons & Dragons novel, but it is based on one of their weirder worlds, Dark Sun. A large desert planet/post apocalyptic fantasy world where centuries of magic have sapped the planet's life force.

Snap! I got pulled into one of those shopping mall surveys before the movie was released and thought I wouldn't like it, then somehow ended up really enjoying both the book and the movie. What got me to read it I don't remember.

I enjoyed the book and have recommended it to someone within the last year. But yeah, I wouldn't say it is epic or even intended to be. To me, it is more fairy tale than high fantasy epic and selling it otherwise is dumb.

But then I bought Stephen King paperbacks back when they were all sold as horror. Eyes of the Dragon and Different Seasons both had back cover text strongly implying there was some horrific stuff in there. I'm fairly sure they both leaned on the word 'evil.'
