Picked up the 2nd Skyward Novella, ReDawn, by Brandon Sanderson and Janci Peterson and really enjoyed it. Moving right into the 3rd and final novella, Evershore, since ReDawn ended on such a cliffhanger.

I am picking up Eifelheim after not reading it for 6+ months, since I got a gift card for Google Books. I have the dead tree version but I can never bring myself to read it, so I finally sprang for the e-book. Hopefully I can finish it relatively quickly

Which was a good plot and well written, but took me 10 days to finish - it didn't really grab me. 3/5

Then I read Island of Glass by Ruth Nestvold. A short YA fantasy, which was a quick read, but I don't think I want more of the same. Also 3/5, for different reasons.

Now I'm reading Bloodline by Felix Francis. The second of his continuation of his father's horse racing thrillers series.

Started The Inside Story of Vatican II: A Firsthand Account of the Council's Inner Workings (formally titled The Rhine Flows Into the Tiber) by Fr. Ralph Wiltgen, on recommendation from a friend. I've been interested to read about this council as I see people argue about it constantly, so now I finally get to read up on the history. I appreciate that the writing style is extremely straight forward and journalistic.

I'm just about to read Skyward for a book group. Thanks for the warning on the cliffhangar!

Which was a most enjoyable horse-racing based murder mystery.

This started very slow. Very. Most of the book were the kids in government detention being studied while much more exciting things happen outside. I had to chuckle on how fast scientific discoveries were made. The ending was better ... some excitement at least. The teens still whiney. Writing still solid. Rated C- [2 stars].

I'll go right into the final book Thrive.
Thrive certainly has non-stop action from page one. It reads better if you just go-with-the-flow. Don't analyze it. Don't pause, just read it through. It's less painful that way. What the author has these teens do is nothing short of ... I'm at a loss of words. Solid writing. Rated C [3 stars].

Enjoy!

I just finished the last novella (Evershore) and now I want more. Have to wait until the next book release, boo.

I have a lot of books I have my bookmark in at the moment, so I'll continue with one of those. I'm going to have a lot of downtime really soon so I hope I can plow through a few and reduce my currently-reading list.

Currently reading House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J Maas. It's the sequel to Crescent City which I absolutely loved. This one is slow going at first as I re-acquaint myself with the main characters. I'm really hoping its as good as the first.

Currently reading Susan Wigg's The Lost and Found Bookshop, another attempt to see if a book about the love of actual dead tree books can resonate with me. Despite having been an insatiable reader since before kindergarten, I've never had any sentimental attachment to, or been able to mythologize, the medium. So books that wax lyrical about the magic (whether literal or metaphoric) of a content delivery system seldom click with me. It will be interesting to see if this one is an exception, as The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry was.

I was definitely drawn into it right away! It's my first Sanderson.

I'm going to get a few more chapters in before I start Sons of Sol by Kevin McNally. I don't usually read more than one book in the same genre but I'm hearing good things about this one and itching to get into it!

Currently reading Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary. I admit, I resisted after the meh that was Artemis, but the comments here and elsewhere convinced me to finally try. I'm going back and forth between the Audible version and the ebook. Well, I'm happy to say the comments were correct, and this is an excellent book. I'm also finding the narrator more than a little annoying, but I can live with it.

I had a lot of issues with the book, but I'm a logical person and dislike other things that I'm not going to mention so as not to make you look for them and ruin the book for you. If you turn your brain off and treat it as a popcorn book, you'll be fine. The Martian remains his best book for me. A lot of people like this book, so I'm certainly in the minority!

I'm halfway through Immune: a Journey into the Mysterious System that Keeps You Alive by Philipp Dettmer, published November 2nd 2021 by Random House (first published October 11th 2016).

I've been looking for a recentish book that does a good job explaining the immune system suitable for a lay person. It looks like I found it on my first try and also seems unlikely any other book would have done the job for me.I urge everyone to read the first two reviews on goodreads. (The second review is 1 star as an effective ploy, it is among the most useful to me reviews of a non-fiction book I have ever read.)

The material is presented in a way that is accessible and entertaining without being insulting. The author has a degree in information design, whatever that is. He is famous for his youtube channel, which I have not seen, but he certainly is skilled in presenting information.

The many full screen color illustrations are very well done and remind me of illustrations in Scientific American. (Which I haven't read in about 30 years, so I don't know what its current illustrations look like.) I don't think they render all that well on standard or color e-ink, so I keep a color LCD tablet handy for when an illustration comes up, which is also nice to have available for referring to the illustration while reading the following text on e-ink and sometimes rereading the preceding text on e-ink.

I’ve been wanting a book like this as well, so thanks for the recommendation. And that 1-star review is everything
