Numbering series which includes omnibus editions?
I have some series which include omnibus editions. Usually if the entire series is in multiple omnibus editions, I just number the omnibus volumes sequentially (1, 2, 3...) even if it's actually 1-4, 5-7, 8-11. I'm not that keen on doing this as it makes it harder to find individual books in the series.
I am now trying to figure out what to do with a series where I have one omnibus edition in the middle, and individual books for the others: 1, 2, 3, 4-6, 7, 8. I thought of numbering them as: a) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 (but then 7 and 8 become 5 and 6) b) 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8 (but then it looks like 5 and 6 are missing) c) 1, 2, 3, 4.56, 7, 8 (but what if later I have an omnibus of 4 books 4-7, or the numbers are 10,11,12, and the value gets rounded from 4.567 to 4.57, or from 10.1112 to 10.11?) What do other people do to deal with this? |

I use 3.06 to mean omnibus of books 3 through 6. Not perfect since I also use decimals for novellas or other stories between the main books.

I created a custom series column, as I have many omnibuses and want to know exactly which books are in them. The advantage is that I can number my series however I want; the disadvantage that there is no automatic numbering, everything must be done manually. Still, I like it better than the alternatives.

Thanks, all. I shall continue to ponder ponderously.

While I know that many people don't like doing so, I include the series in the title: "Casino Royale [James Bond #1]" with "James Bond 1.0" for the series field. This allows me to deal with an omnibus in the title. Thus, if I have a book combining the first three Bond novels, I might have "James Bond Omnibus [James Bond #1-3]" but I'd just put "James Bond 1.0" in the series field. Certainly not perfect, but I've found that it works for me.

An alternative is to use the plugin Epub Split to split the omnibus edition into its separate books, and number them naturally.
