I was referring to the ability to sync. The few times I wanted to remain on an older firmware version, I used the update later button after the update download and removed the files before allowing them to be installed. I also played with setting garbage affiliates though that was very hit and miss in it's ability to block updates

I've been ignoring the upgrade for a few weeks since I read this thread. I am still able to sideload my books without issue. I just close the "update" notice which I get on my pc when I connect via Calibre

Well, my Kobo just crapped itself. I plugged it in and added a few books. Ejected. Connected a second time to update metadata. Ejected and decided to restart so I wouldn't have to worry about Kobo losing my place.

When I restarted, it decided it was a new device that had to be registered. Now it is showing I have 986 books on the device.

I don't know what I had before, but it was more than that. The book I was currently reading doesn't show in search. I'm hoping that Kobo is thinking in the background and will find the rest of my books.

I tried to give it a go. But I am rolling backwards and will wait to install future updates.

Edit: I've reinstalled 4.30 and the patches. Each time I restart it says 'importing content' or some such and my book count increases.

It says there are no series and all my collection names are there, but they show 0 books. I just reconnected to Calibre and ejected. It is importing content again and hopefully that will fix it.

I've had that happen once with 4.31. Thinking the database corrupted so badly that the Kobo gave up on trying to read it and kicked it back to the setup screen.

I don't think I had any books go missing in my case, but I just restored my database backup so I didn't really check in detail.

Still, it wouldn't surprise me if the Kobo hit a limit of how many books it can import at a time though - when switching to the Libra H2O, I was advised to re-upload all my sideloads in batches to avoid issues.

Well, it's now back up to 4208 books. That's likely all of them. I just plugged the Kobo back in and had Calibre refresh the metadata. Series are filled in again. But all my tags still show 0. Not sure why that is.

This sounds depressingly like the behavior of my old NOOK GlowLight3. That beast seemed to re-import ALL sideloaded material whenever I sideloaded anything new. With a sizeable sideloaded library, it took a LONG time. And disconnecting the NOOK from the PC before it finished was a bad idea. Very bad.

The re-imported books fell off the user-created shelves because they were "new".

All this is what first convinced me to abandon NOOK for Kobo. So my fingers are crossed that they will undo whatever voodoo curse they've allowed to creep in.

That happens on my Glowlight 3 as well. But it doesn't happen on my 2015 Glowlight Plus which runs essentially the same software. I wonder what is going on there?

I'm plugging it in again and hitting 'Update cached metadata on device'.

If that doesn't repopulate my collections (again, all collection names show on the Kobo, but their count is 0), what else might I try?

Re-importing wipes out the shelves/collections of any sideloaded books -- only Kobo Store ones sync to server. But you can use Calibre + KoboTouchExtended (I think also basic KoboTouch) to set a tag-like column for shelves/collections and that will update it when you connect.

Something was missed somewhere or I just do not understand your post at all. I already have Kobo Touch and Kobo Touch Extended set up as you show and have had them set up for years (see attached image).

4.31 finally busted my Kobo but good. After restarting it, the Kobo all of a sudden needed me to sign in and was acting like a brand new device.

I rolled back to firmware 4.30 and have reapplied patches.

Now, since the above happened, I have not added any books to my Kobo (all books on my Kobo are sideloaded. Every single one).

Over time, Kobo rebuilt my library. When I got signed out, the sideloaded books were not wiped from the device. Kobo just 'forgot' about them and slowly rebuilt its database.

Once that was all done, I noticed that in My Books, Series was blank. Collections showed all of my collection names. But they all show '0 books'

I hooked the Kobo back up to Calibre and clicked 'Update cached metadata on device.'

When I ejected, Series was repopulated.

Collections still shows all collection names, but each still lists '0 books' (see attached image)

I have tried restarting and have tried connecting to Calibre and clicking 'Update cached metadata on device' several times. Everything else is coming back together. But I can't seem to get collections rebuilt.

Do I have to delete all books and then sideload them again to get collections to work?

Started using the below in NickelMenu as I accidentally updated my Aura One "again" when i connected to my PC... I use it to remove the update files after I do a synch.

USE AT OWN RISK if anyone plans to try it as I don't know what I am doing and it could cause issues. My reader still needs a factory reset eventually so it is not an issue for me at this stage.

Code:
menu_item:main :Delete Update:cmd_output:500 :rm -v /mnt/onboard/.kobo/chain_success :cmd_output:500 :rm -v -f /mnt/onboard/.kobo/KoboRoot.tgz
	    chain_success :cmd_output:500 :rm -v -f /mnt/onboard/.kobo/manifest.md5sum

Yes, this is to be expected. The list of collections/shelves is still in the database actually I think the list of shelves gets synced, but your re-imported books aren't assigned to them because Kobo had to rebuild that part of the database. Take a look and you'll see reading positions will have been reset too.

Calibre stores series data by default. But Calibre doesn't store any collection/shelf information without setting up the Kobo collection column. So if you don't have one, there is nothing for it to update.

I promise, I am not purposely being obtuse here. But I do not understand what you are saying.

Collections worked fine on the Kobo until 4.31 caused it to crap the bed earlier today.

Now Collections are all empty.

I updated cached metadata which I thought would send the tag info back over to update collections.

If that doesn't work, what can I do to get collections updated, short of deleting all content from the Kobo and sending it back?

As mentioned, I already have Calibre set up to manage collections and have done so for years. Screenshot attached in my earlier post.

Unless you have a Kobo collection column assigned, it won't send the collection information, because the Calibre library does not have that information.

You need to create a tag-like column, add the info for your books, and assign it in your driver settings.

Then Calibre will be able to update it.

I already have the Tags column assigned to send collection information.

Does refreshing metadata not resend tag information? I thought it did.

One more time, here's how I have KoboTouchExtended set up. Collections column is Tags
