The cover generation not being finished would be a likely culprit. I'm not sure whether epubs or kepubs would be worse. For epubs, the RMSDK is used to render the start of the book at then generate the cover from that. For kepubs, the image marked as the cover is extracted and resized.

I think it also supports my observation that it only affects new books -- if they are already on the device, it does not need to generate the cover. For what it matters, I've connected several times today (lots of updated fanfics ) and as long as I made sure to open the ePub there's no issues. |

They don't get displayed in the book text, but they do in the fonts list, which shows the font with the font itself. This means that it is a document problem. Something similar happens with the "Font test document" generated with KOReader. If I convert it to kepub, fonts with numbers don't get displayed unless their names are quoted in the css defining the styles that show them. I don't know how to do that on a global device level. I've tested it on kepubs, not with epubs. Maybe they work also with them. Can anyone confirm? Last edited by Barruel; 02-17-2022 at 07:20 PM.

Waiting a minute or so after the home screen has finished updating should give time for the processes to finish and be cleaned up.

If someone does this and the device still causes an error, then something else is going on, yes?

Actually, if that is your concern, you explicitly do not want to do this. As I said, the covers are generated on demand. If you open the book list, then the covers for the five books displayed will be generated. As well as those for the home screen. That means more covers, more time, and if this is actually the problem, more chance of it going wrong. If you need to reconnect, wait on the home screen for a couple of minutes.

Question: How does cover generation work if the Calibre driver is set to send it? I just sent a new book to device and I did not see it switch from a generic cover to the embedded one. |

If you have the cover options turned on in the driver, the driver will generate the covers from the covers shown in the library and put them on the device. The device will use them.

Also, the KoboUtilities plugin can also upload the covers in Calibre's library after the book is already on the device. Either way, you can have a cover from Calibre on the device that is different from the cover embedded in the book. I frequently replace covers that are ugly or have fonts too small to see in the device cover thumbnails, etc., and typically do not embed them in the book.

Another update: I accidentally connected with a kepub open. Aside from the usual scan&fix prompt, my Kobo stopped saving the reading position after I disconnected. No further problems after a reboot, thankfully. Is anybody else able to confirm this? |

Ended up downgrading to 4.30 after I got a database corruption today (I/O error according to Calibre - thankfully I keep backups, so I didn't have to reset my ereader). I sent over some books yesterday and then it happened when I reconnected it today, with everything have been imported long before I did. No books open either, I was on the home screen. I hadn't noticed before but with 4.31, besides the random freezes, I kept having problems connecting the device to my computer - the 'Connect' popup wouldn't appear immediately, or if it did it sometimes it would disappear, or the screen would sort of flash twice before connecting... I was sure it was the cable (though I was using the one that came with the Libra), but downgrading fixed all of these problems immediately. Also, my reading progress was always saved correctly and Windows never prompted me to 'scan & fix' the device. |

4.31 should have been pulled 3 pages of comments ago.
