Sigh. I forget to reboot just once and the database corruption issues cropped up again.
Got it fixed, but it's a bit stressful -- I'm tempted to downgrade again and then just re-upgrade whenever I need to use sync (e.g. when I get new books). Last edited by ownedbycats; 02-11-2022 at 10:24 PM. |

Wouldn't it be easier to just sideload everything until Kobo has released a fix? I mean this mess with downgrading/upgrading/rebooting etc is surely more onerous. Well, it would be for me, but then I sideload everything anyway, even my Kobo purchases.

Thank you, Jon!
Maybe it is too hard to tell with the issues, as I suspect the crashes and interrupted indexing will eat up a lot of energy. I asked because the Aura One had similiar low battery run times in the beginning and they were solved with an update. The Sage, Forma and One do have the same size battery, so I guess reading only should give similar battery times, unless the faster processor sucks up a lot. |

I'm not convinced the 31 firmware is causing this. I think the bug is older and happens in maybe the last 2-3 versions, maybe just less frequently.
I've got about 800 books on my device right now, but I had about 2500 on it before. I think the 31 firmware imports new books faster, because in previous firmwares I had to load them in smaller batches or it would time out while importing. Because I was loading in smaller batches (and loading more books) and doing the import cycle more often, it was more likely to corrupt the database between batches -- and I had that problem at least two versions ago. |

I'm pretty sure this is a new issue with 4.31 firmware. Sideloading even a single book without rebooting causes the problem, every single time, without fail. Also, if I do not reboot after sideloading a book, my reader loses its reading position for books I've already started reading. None of that happened with previous firmware versions. Yes, I did occasionally experience the scan error but I couldn't MAKE it happen (now I can reproduce the error consistently simply by not rebooting the reader after adding a book), and my reader never lost the reading position for books I'd already started reading. Only with 4.31 do these problems occur consistently.

I've considered it, but I've had issues with trying to swap out the sideloaded version with the Kobo version in the past. So I only do it when there's issues with the Kobo version.

I've done it on two readers this week, both brand new and updated through sync during the set up process, without a hitch. Just go for it, it works snoothly with these two versions.

What was your process?
I don't remember exactly how I messed it up, but I recall that when I tried to delete the older sideloaded copy the newly-added Kobo one also disappeared and I had to repair account. |

I just unzipped 4.30 into the .kobo folder. No deleting of anything.

In my limited testing, 4.31 does improve the battery life on my Sage. Unhappily, it also seems to have introduced a serious memory leak issue. When I telnet to my Sage and run free -m, the memory tends to drop like a paralyzed falcon and does not recover. When I switch fonts, trying to use a large font file such as Arial Unicode MS can drop the reported available memory into the single digits. Shortly after that, I often found my Sage spontaneously rebooting. My workaround so far has been to use NickelMenu to reboot my Sage after every second book and when playing with the fonts.

I have not tried to run the numbers to see for sure but I do believe that the battery usage has been optimized somewhat on the sage. If I read before I go to sleep starting with a full charge i would be down to about 92-95 % under earlier firmware versions. With the 4.31 it is typically more like 94-96 %. This is certainly not scientific but I have been watching the percentages. I read with the light at 6% and WIFI/Bluetooth always off.
Hope this helps |
