Just starting The Apollo Murders by Chris Hadfield. Authenticity shouldn't be a problem, at least

Finished Anne of Green Gables and that ending just means I have to read Anne of Avonlea next. Dangit. Thankfully it's a free book.

I've finally returned to reading and enjoying poetry. My reading habits changed drastically in 2020, and have been out of whack ever since. One change being a complete loss of interest in poetry.
Picked up my doorstop of a DTB copy of The Collected Poems of Louis MacNeice -- 800+ pages of wordplay bliss. MacNeice's poems demand to be read aloud - the rhymes, sounds, and cadences need to be heard and seen. Revisited old favorites like "Snow" and "Death of an actress" as well as the beautiful "Autumn Journal." Discovered the eerie "Corpse Carousal" - evoking the music of Poe's "The Bells". |

3.75/5 for Chris Hadfield's The Apollo Murders - a little overlong and over-clever for my tastes. Now onto something fun and fast: Karen Baugh Menuhin's The Tomb of the Chatelaine, book 6 in the Heathcliff Lennox series

Now reading:
The Phantom Tollbooth - Never read this before, and saw it recommended somewhere. I think I will finish this today after work considering it's length. Need something lighthearted after recent events in my life. Friendship of Christ: Exploring the Humanity of Jesus Christ by Fr. Robert Hugh Benson. This is a collection of thirteen homilies that Fr. Benson did on the subject of friendship with Christ. Only 20% in and it's already made me cry a LOT. I will absolutely be reading more by Fr. Benson, especially since his work is out of copyright. Thankfully this book has been made available for free on the Notre Dame website. |

Next I read Hard Fought by Greg Bear. Far future interstellar war. I found the story ultimately unsatisfying. 3/5. And now I'm reading Postmortem by Patricia Cornwell. |

Lonesome Dove finally came through Libby so starting that. Only one chapter in but I am enjoying it so far.
I'm leaving my job in 2 weeks, so I decided to get a gift for my coworker who's English is quite fluent and she always loves practicing with me. I've decided to give her one of my childhood favorites, Charlotte's Web, and I'm going to reread it so that I can relive that story and then write a nice note in the front of the book appreciating the time she spent with me over the past 2 years. I don't expect her to read it, but it might be a nice memento of me. |

Definitely not a "cosy"! Rather detailed, and with some dwelling on people's reactions to the crime. But overall, a good police/medical examiner procedural murder mystery.
Next up: The Empty Throne by Bernard Cornwell. The eighth in his Last Kingdom series set in and after the time of King Alfred. |

From the library I read Libriomancer by Jim C. Hines.
Interesting and original. The main characters were likable and nicely developed. The idea of pulling a real authentic ray gun and sword from a book is supreme coolness. The mystery angle was good, comedic touches nicely done but the romance bit made me recoil. Basically, this author used other author's dei ex machina to solve his insurmountable problems. All good in the end. Strong C [3 stars]. |
